Vladi - Is democracy a buzzword?

Listen Later

Vlad has studied politics and through his studies has focused on the concept of democracy. When someone studies a topic they have a deep passion for, regardless of how long they study, that passion and interest remains with them. So it is for Vladi and I. Politics, democracy, social organisation, equality and social equilibrium are issues that have required constant focus, reassessment in light of the realities we believe we see before us and how so much flatters to deceive. So much can be done with human potential, if only that potential was truly allowed to flourish. So why isn’t it?

Democracy, a system of political organisation that promotes the participation of the vast majority in selecting a representative few to operate the levers of social governance on their behalf. By the people and for the people. Somewhere in the process of governing however, the prepositions have been misused or changed. Above the people and against the people are perhaps more applicable in many ways. Politicians have a divine right after all to award themselves a pay rise when the people are struggling with rising energy costs. Poor people have to continue paying high levels of taxes because system changes in their interest leave them with less money than before, not to mention being confused as to what the hell the new system is. Taxation is so confusing nobody has a clue what it’s fit for. Where does the money go anyway? If governments work for us, why do we not get complete financial oversight? Why can we not choose which parts of the budget to reduce or increase? Why do we have no say on which organisations receive government contracts?

With Vlad, we are venturing along a journey that starts here. We have begun our introductory talk on democracy. In our next session, we will argue our cases for democracy, built afresh from the ground up.

We would love to hear your critiques. Why are we wrong? Why are we right?

Vlad references Giovanni Sartori, a Florentine 20th century political scientist. It is interesting to recall that Sartori considered that political science lacked coordination in terminology. Perhaps this lack of coordination is by design.

Thank you Vlad for your time and outspoken views that always make me pause and think.
