Two and a Mic - The Social Podcast

Vladi - It's not about democracy, it's about the best system

Listen Later

Today starts with a typically robust attack from Vlad on my primarily impregnable concept of Star Trekkie proportions. In a conflict of society versus the individual, surely society must win out, right? That’s not always the right approach says Vlad. There are some middle roads where, left to itself, society allows for individuals to develop and create, which also allows society to develop and benefit at the same time. That’s not to allow individual entrepreneurship to be completely at liberty to exercise its right to exploit and profit, however not every principle or idea should become a law or maxim.

Who owns time? Who owns my time? Why doesn’t technology help us in the way it was promised to? Multinationals versus small, local companies, and what kind of societal structure will best manage the impact of these different kinds of structures?

Politics, policy and polity screams Vlad from the rafters, we need to consider these differences.

There are clear areas of disagreement in how to manage our islands and where we want to take our systems. In this debate, as in those coming up, we use some controversial examples to make political points, but these are political discussions aimed at finding a right balance between communities and business, individual rights and collective responsibilities and not every concept is as easy to arrange as the intention believes.

As always, I am grateful to my guest. Thanks, Vlad, for your time and insight.
