(VO) Addiction, rituals and transparency as a superpower with therapist Jerry Hyde

Listen Later

This the original version of the episode, in English. It is also available in a French dubbed version.

Today, I’m joined by English therapist Jerry Hyde. For those who follow the podcast, he is the husband of artist and filmmaker Mai Hua, whom I interviewed in episode 7. Together, they created the film May Day, which has just been released. The documentary follows a 14-day therapeutic retreat, similar to the ones they regularly hold. For this one, Mai and Jerry brought together 12 participants in a remote forest, with no electricity or phone signal. I went to see it at the cinema last week. It was fascinating, unsettling, moving — and full of love, too. It captures an intense collective and intimate experience, where each person confronts their story, their shadows, fears, and traumas. It also shows the importance of the circle and mutual listening. Mai and Jerry were there to present the film, and I immediately thought: Jerry has to be on the podcast!

Jerry mainly works with men, and one of his specialties is men’s sharing circles. You can get a glimpse of that in the film Make Me a Man, which brings together testimonies from men who have taken part in such groups. That, too, is a powerful emotional experience. It’s so rare. And that, it seems, is Jerry’s gift: creating space for people to speak, opening hearts. I wanted to learn more about him and his journey, which — as you’ll hear — is unique, and very psychedelic!

In this episode, we talk, among other things, about addiction, power, violence, rituals, humility, and vulnerability.
