Justice Department Inspector General on Thursday launched an investigation into the use of force by federal law enforcement agents in Portland, Oregon, and Washington, D.C., during recent protests alleged racial bias in the justice system. Security forces have frequently tear-gassed and clubbed demonstrators during weeks of unrest. Criminal and constitutional law experts question the legality of the deployments and use of force.

A group of 15 U.S. major city mayors is calling on the federal government to immediately withdraw federal forces and “agree to no further unilateral deployments in U.S. cities" after U.S. President Trump announced he was sending more officers. The head of emergencies at the World Health Organization said on Wednesday it's becoming clear that many who develop over moderate illness from COVID-19 face long-term issues like fatigue. Dr. Michael Ryan said the virus can lead to an inflammatory process in air sacs and small blood vessels, and as a result it can take a long time for lung and heart functions to get back to normal, even for otherwise healthy young people.
