This episode finds me in Houston visiting my good friend and former neighbor Donna Crump, creator/choreographer/artistic director of contemporary dance company Good Dance Since 1984. Ms. Crump relocated to Houston in 2017, and this little reunion captures my first trip to Houston to see her and the fam. Before taking this road trip to Houston I asked Donna if she could inject her choreography skills into a piece I am currently working on in honor of my grandmother... Thankfully she was down for the cause!
Donna and I have a long history of vibing out over great food, but because this episode takes place in her dance studio we just made it a gas station junk food extravaganza. 🍫🍬🍟🥤
Since taping this episode Donna has gone on to not only premier new original work on the Houston dance scene, she also managed to snag the cover of Southwest Contemporary Magazine's Fall 2021 issue along with her co-collaborator and fellow dancer/choreographer/filmmaker Kay Collymore. I had the pleasure of returning to H-Town back in July to film the two for what would ultimately become a visual contribution to their LINEAR/FUNCTION Houston debut show. It's always super fun to wrap w/Donna, I'm glad you all get to be the fly on the wall to witness what real neighborly love feels like because...
It's a feeling.
Whether you're staying in one of his AirBnB's or dining at his award winning food truck Rollin' Fatties NOLA, this episode's guest is a New Orleans native who prides himself in providing that down home hospitality the city is known for. Ze11a happens to wear multiple hats but in this episode we converse about his food truck and music production background, southern rap and the current state of the music industry, and just how much he loves the vegan muffaletta sandwich I prepared for him per his request.
If you're familiar with my musical catalogue you've certainly heard Ze11a's production and live percussion skills at work on the songs "DOPE (That Real)" and "How Can I Luv U?". If you have absolutely no clue what I'm talking about... well, what are you waiting for!???? 😕
GO PEEP!
Before you even mention it, I know I'm a week late delivering this episode😔 I'm still getting logistics sorted out but it is in fact... in FULL effect.
In this episode my favorite morning workout partner Mina Seck swoops through with one of her dank azz charcuterie boards for us to feast upon. We discuss the transformative nature of the pandemic, reclaiming peace, the future of her business BeetsNThyme, and how two wacky black chicks from the states initially met on a random night in Torino, Italy over that smoke🌬️
Honestly, I'm not even sure if this episode can be considered an actual "podcast"? To put in my faithful indentured editor's words (my son Ori) "calling this episode a podcast is a stretch"🤨 ... but we gone roll with it!
I kickstart this podcast by sharing space with my folks, @QueenZardis and @LanceENichols over some scrumptious Budsies Authentic Thai. We discuss how my family's New Orleans roots wound up in Los Angeles chasing entertainment, only to find ourselves comfortably back in the Big Easy... but more importantly, in Treme'. The historic and culturally significant neighborhood my mother is from also happens to be the same neighborhood my father repped with love while a cast member on the hit HBO series, Treme. Settle in and enjoy being a fly on the wall bearing witness to one of Hollywood South's wackiest family convos.
