Insurance broker and Movember ambassador Andrew Still shares how losing a friend led to a decade of mental health advocacy in construction.

Suicide prevention isn’t a one-month campaign. It’s a year-round commitment. In this episode of Voices of CFMA, Sal Marino talks with Andrew Still — insurance broker, self-described “recovering CPA” and Movember Philadelphia ambassador — about turning a personal loss into more than a decade of advocacy for mental health in the construction industry.

Andrew remembers his friend Jared Banner, whom he lost to suicide in 2006, and explains why he chose to share that story publicly. He and Sal dig into why construction faces such a serious mental health challenge, from long hours and physical strain to financial pressure and a culture that treats asking for help as weakness. Andrew also points to the work of organizations like the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention (CIASP) in making these conversations normal across the industry. They also cover the gap between employee assistance program access and actual use, the business cost of ignoring wellbeing, and how a peer “coach” model builds trust that a toolbox talk can’t.
