Olguin says not much has changed in the 30 years since he left Taos but he's glad to be back and to help Taos athletes train to be their best selves. Olguin talks about his experience working at California State University, Fresno, and Texas Southern University and how that has prepared him to be the coach he is today. He also shares the infamous story of losing his finger in a football match as a teenager playing against Raton.

This week on "Voices of Taos," join copy editor and reporter Emery Veilleux as she talks with Galen Gisler, a member of the New Mexico DarkSky State Council. New Mexico DarkSky, which is a chapter of DarkSky International, will advocate during the 2025 legislative session to revamp the 1999 Night Sky Protection Act. Gisler shares with Veilleux why updating the act is essential for preserving NM’s night skies, especially because the older law did not take into account LED technology. He talks about how light pollution can have adverse effects on animals, disturbing migration and hunting habitats. Gisler finally shares how listeners can start conversations with their neighbors who have bright lights and how simple changes to outdoor lighting can help with safety and mitigate light pollution.

"Passive solar is the technology of the history of all life forms. But its not sexy these days." - Steve Kenin

This week on Voices of Taos join assistant editor Geoffrey Plant as he talks with solar pioneer Steve Kenin. Kenin shares how he became interested in solar energy in the 1970s when he moved to New Mexico from Philadelphia. During this time he started a passive solar company, Solar Resources Inc. The company created kits for homeowners to add Solar Rooms to their homes and thus help combat expensive utility bills. Kenin has recently developed a new passive solar invention, the Solar Bubble. The Solar Bubble is an aluminum-framed, plastic-sheathed pocket of air that, affixed atop part of a roof or wall, produces warm air that is directed by thermostat and fan — powered by the electrical grid or solar panels — into a home or business. Kenin hopes this technology is accessible enough for lots of different people to use on their homes.

This week on Voices of Taos join reporter Olivia Lewis as she talks with Delinda VanneBrightyn, president and K9 unit leader of Taos Search and Rescue (SAR-Taos). Delinda has been involved with SAR-Taos for twenty-years. She shares with Olivia how her love of dogs and the outdoors made the organization the perfect fit for her. Delinda speaks to how search and rescue dogs' training differs from regular pet training. She even brought in her SAR trained White Shepard Akio Yodasan to the recording! Delinda also talks about SAR-Taos' recent rescue of two hikers near Wheeler Peak before Christmas and how new technology helped SAR-Taos respond quickly to the emergency.

Join Taos News' Tempo editor Lynne Robinson as she chats with Taos Pueblo artist Jonathan Warm Day Coming. Jonathan talks about his upcoming exhibition of new and old work at the Fechin House. Recently Jonathan has been enjoying drawing on ledger paper, a new medium for him. Lynne and Jonathan also talk about his mother, artist Eva Mirabal, and how she influenced his artistic interests. Jonathan talks about some of the books he has worked on, including a biography of his mother that he co-wrote with the late Lois Palken Rudnick.

Picuris Pueblo is among the most rural and smallest tribes in Northern New Mexico. Nestled in the high mountains between Taos and Española, the pueblo of about 300 residents has struggled to find long-term economic development and opportunities to sustain its community. Picuris Pueblo Governor Craig Quanchello and author Daniel Gibson join "Conversations Different" host Inez Russell Gomez to discuss the large-scale venture the pueblo has successfully undertaken to address that economic struggle –– ownership of the Hotel Santa Fe. Quanchello reflects on the process that led to the Native and non-Native partnership that allowed the project to happen, while Gibson talks about his new book that documents it along with a focus on the Picuris people.

This week on Voices of Taos join assistant editor Geoffrey Plant as he talks with Bryanna Baker, a victim of medical malpractice, and Cid Lopez, Baker's lawyer and a specialist in malpractice claims. During the interview, Baker shares her story of being pregnant and having a heart attack when she was 24 years old in 2006. Sadly she was misdiagnosed at two medical facilities in Northern New Mexico before she received adequate care. By the time doctors figured out what was wrong, she had suffered irreparable damage to her heart and lost her pregnancy. She filed a medical malpractice lawsuit and won, but Baker said her reward, which was capped under state statute at the time and significantly less than her $9.5 million verdict, is not adequate compensation. Lopez helped advocate for the cap to be raised in 2021, which has been a relief to victims of medical malpractice in the state. But medical providers, hospitals and public interest groups blame the state's shortage of physicians in part on the high cost of malpractice insurance in New Mexico, which ranks second in the nation for the number of malpractice lawsuits and first among states for insurance loss rates, according to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services data. Lopez says that other issues should be blamed for this shortage, such as the gross receipt tax on medical services and the low reimbursement for medicare.

This week on Voices of Taos, producer Laura Martin Baseman sits down with Robert Nott who was a reporter with the Santa Fe New Mexican for over 25 years. Although he is currently the communications director for the New Mexico Department of Health, Robert returns to his old stomping grounds to share what he learned researching the Santa Fe New Mexican's history. The daily paper turned 175 years old on November 24th. Robert shares some of the treasures he uncovered, including the murder of a fortune teller. Laura and Robert also discuss how the daily paper kept tabs on Santa Fe and New Mexico's growth over the years and why local papers are essential parts of their local communities.
