What do we actually know about the people we call our audience?
In this To Them reflection, Intend to Relate considers the relationship between a creator, the social media company providing the tools, and the people encountering the work. A follow, a view, or a reported action gives us something to observe. It does not, by itself, establish what another person understood, intended, or felt.
Our purposes include developing the framework, experimenting with multimedia, keeping publications available, and making meaningful relating possible. Authentic expression is part of the value. Follower counts and seconds watched are not our present objectives.
We also consider pace, music, and learning, then introduce a separate, hypothetical model of a passive follower’s encounters: a handle, a brief description, a passing post, and a few seconds of video. What can those fragments support? What connections in a larger body of work remain unavailable?
Understanding and direct engagement are distinct. Someone may study closely without ever leaving a comment. A thoughtful question may begin an encounter before much understanding has developed.
What have we actually encountered, and what have we supplied from our own expectations?
