In 1517 a cruel blow fell upon the great Augustinian family; Luther, one of its members, raised the cry of revolt which was to be echoed for centuries by every passion. But the illustrious Order, which had unwittingly nurtured this child of evil, was none the less acceptable to God; and He deigned, before long, to demonstrate this, for the consolation of institutes whose very excellence exposes unworthy subjects to more dangerous falls. It was at the First Vespers of All Saints that Luther broached, at Wittenburg, his famous theses against indulgences and the authority of the Roman Pontiff; within a month, on November 25 of the same year, Thomas of Villanova pronounced his vows at Salamanca, and filled up the place left vacant by the heresiarch. Amid the storms of social disorder, and the noise of the world’s disturbances, the glory rendered by one saint to the ever-tranquil Trinity, outweighs all the insults and blasphemies of hell.

From the St. Andrew Daily Missal Dom Gaspar Lefebvre writes

When the Emperor Maximian led his army into Gaul, the Theban Legion, composed of 660 soldiers under the command of St. Maurice, refused to take part in the ceremonies in honour of the gods. They were massacred out of hatred for the name of Christ, A.D. 297 at Agaune, now called St. Maurice (Valais).

Sirach 45:30

The Lord gave him assurance of favour and made a prince of him, the honour of the priesthood was to be his for ever.

Psalm 131:1

Lord, remember David, and all his patient endurance.

℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.

O God, Who didst adorn blessed Thomas, Thy Bishop, with the virtue of exceeding charity towards the poor: we beseech Thee, that by his intercession, Thou wouldst deign to pour forth the riches of Thy mercy on all who humbly call on Thee.

Commemoration of St. Maurice and Companions

Grant, almighty God, we pray Thee, that this solemnity of Thy holy Martyrs Maurice and his companions may bring us joy: and that while we glory in their heavenly triumph, we may rely on their intercession.

Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages.

℟. Amen.

Lesson

From the Wisdom of Sirach

Sirach 44:16–45:20

Here was a great priest, whose life was acceptable to God, and proved ever faithful to him; when the day of retribution came, he made amends for all. Where shall we find another to keep the law of the Most High as he kept it? So it was the Lord took an oath that he should be the father of his chosen people. The Lord gave him the blessing which should extend to all nations, renewing the covenant in his person; ratified the blessings he uttered, and singled him out for favour, such grace he found in the eyes of the Lord.

The Lord made him great in the sight of kings, and crowned him with glory. He made a covenant with him for ever, entrusting him with the great office of the priesthood, and enriching him with high honour. He was to serve the Lord as his priest, privileged to act in his name and to offer incense to him, acceptable in its fragrance.

Gradual

Sirach 44:16, 20

Here was a great priest whose life was acceptable to God.

℣. Where shall we find another to keep the law of the Most High as he kept it?

Alleluia. Alleluia.

Psalm 109:4

℣. Thou art a priest for ever according to the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia.

At that time Jesus told this parable to his disciples: A man who was going on his travels called his trusted servants to him and committed his money to their charge. He gave five talents to one, two to another, and one to another, according to their several abilities, and with that he set out on his journey. The man who had received five talents went and traded with them, until he had made a profit of five talents more; and in the same way he who had received two made a profit of two. Whereas he who had received but one went off and made a hole in the ground, and there hid his master’s money.

Long afterwards, the master of those servants came back, and entered into a reckoning with them.
