How Can Church Planters Thrive and not Just Survive?
Church planting can be exciting, stretching and deeply rewarding. But what enables a new church not simply to survive, but genuinely to thrive?
In this episode of the Vox Ministries Podcast, I talk with Rev Dr Canon Dave Richards about the health of church planters, the kinds of leadership that help churches grow, and what faithful church planting might look like in our changing culture.
Drawing on years of ministry experience and his doctoral research into church planting, Dave reflects on what he has observed in church plants that thrive — and those that struggle simply to survive.
We talk about:
What helps church planters thrive rather than just survive
The different types of leaders and leadership gifts that can help church plants grow• Why understanding who you are as a leader matters• Some of the common pressures and challenges facing church planters• The importance of remaining rooted in orthodox Christian theology and faithful to the gospel• What Dave sees happening in the current spiritual landscape• Whether there are encouraging signs of renewed openness to Christianity• What he would say to those considering planting a church in today’s culture
Church planting isn’t simply about attracting people or starting something new. We need healthy leaders building healthy churches that are deeply rooted in Scripture, faithful to the historic Christian faith and confident in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Whether you’re planting, pastoring, exploring a call to ministry, or thinking about the future of the church, I hope this conversation will encourage and challenge you.

Clive Parnell explores “Is The Quiet Revival A Revival? “ with Jim Paul from the English L’abri.
It has been reported that the UK has seen a rise in Gen Z going to church and buying more Bibles. The initial report commissioned by the Bible Society was seen to be inaccurate due to no fault of their own, but though the way “YOUGOV” conducted the survey.
The report, whoever raises lots of stats that many have seen as being accurate on the ground. Pastors & Youth pastors testify to seeing changes - young men have turned up at church with no Christian background. Shops have seen an increase in Bible sales.
This podcast explores if this is a revival. It also examines the shift from new atheism to people becoming more open to spirituality.
In all the excitement and interest in “The Quiet Revival” Clive and Jim explore what kind of Christianity Gen Z are drawn to and why orthodoxy seems to be attractive to be many. In the midst of the increased interest do many of these young people know the Gospel, and have they found salvation in Jesus?
