Her dad was a faculty member of the university she attended; Madeleine pranked her Dad for April's fools and nearly killed him; when revealed as a prank; dad didn't talk to her for three days

After graduating from college she was desperately trying to fit into mold for a Master's Program; her dad suggested she should take a year and do something she had never done before; packed a bag and bought a one-way ticket and headed out on an adventure

Started her trip in Canada; then headed to Europe and the middle east and south east Asia; lived in south east Asia for about year

Learning about different cultural norms helps you to see your life in a new light; some places in the world there is no toilet paper and that's ok

In college majored in religion, environmental science, and writing--those seem disconnected but they all served her well in her future life and work

First job out of college she worked project management and change management for a consulting firm; helped Ralph Lauren put their brand on the web during the dot.com boom; the person in charge of web development at Ralph Lauren was 28 years old

Did her MBA and then got a job with L'Oreal of Paris; Monica stuck out like a sore thumb--the company is run by smart beautiful women really into hair and makeup since a young age--much like the movie "The Devil wears Prada"

Working @ L'Oreal emptying bottles of lotion at 2 am with her boss who says--"Is this NOT the MOST fun thing you've ever done?"  The question led Monica to leave L'Oreal and start her own business

Leaving L'Oreal she had the experience of doing 3 product launches a year; so she thought she was hot shit and was going to just kill as an entrepreneur right away; the reality was after a year she was 25K in debt and couldn't figure had to pay it off

Stuck in a mode of working 60 hours/week so she didn't have to work 40 hours/week for someone else; walked dogs, did cat sitting, did focus groups and rented out her apartment; rock bottom was sitting on floor in a New York subway feeling like a bag lady

She gave herself one year to figure out this business thing (with help) and if it didn't work; she would go get a job.  She learned that she was doing the business steps in the wrong order; like writing a book when you don't have money for groceries

Once she learned the 5 steps and the right order in which to take the steps; she was able to make enough money in her business to pay off her debt she also put 12K in the bank; every year after that she was able to double or triple her revenue

How feeling shame about not making money holds us back from making money

His meditation practice is based on a Tibetan Buddhist practice that he does for 20 minutes every morning; but more importantly he integrate the practice throughout the work day buy taking 10, 20, 30 seconds to rest his mind with a "mini meditation"

Was burnt out after his career in journalism; got some acupuncture to treat his burn out; he noticed that the acupuncturist is very calm and chill; which slowing leads him to get into Tibetan Buddhism; study meditation; and go on retreats in India

When asked to rate 7 areas of life, most people rate several areas an average of a 4 and that's ok, Denise wants to you realize that you can get a life of 10's across the board

1st job after Master Degree as a clinical psychologist was in community mental health; thought this was the best way to help; in reality she was working to help people who didn't want help, in a system that could not help them; the job was more about policy, paperwork and procedure than people--burn out ensured

Worked that job for 5 years; the first 2 years was life a honeymoon period--after that she became a zombie; living for the weekends feeling tired all the time; overwhelmed underpaid (classic Vroom Vroom phase); stayed in the stuck phase didn't like where she was; but didn't know what else to do

The Veer:  found a network marketing opportunity through a small group of friends from church; slowing starting working their side-hustle from 5-midnight while keeping their day jobs

Eventually realized they were wasting time at their jobs; but they were still afraid to quit; what about Health insurance?  Finally, they flipped a coin to decide who would quit their job first; her husband won/lost the flip and quit first; 6 months later Denise quit her job

Started the website/blog/podcast because she wanted a way to connect with people without having to travel; one reason is because she now has 2 kids and wants to travel less and spend more time with the kids

Denise likes to focus on meaning over money; that means that if she focuses her efforts on providing value to people; then the money comes

You can use stories to connect with people; you create a picture in peoples minds of what they are experiencing and get them to think "yeah...me too"; You want to have a beginning, middle, and end; and use less facts and more sights, sounds and smells

Neuroscience is telling us that our thoughts physically change the neurons in your brain; you either have fear-based thoughts which make your neurons look like dead cacti in your brain; whereas with faith-based thoughts your neurons look more like a willow tree or a blossoming flower

We used to like that stress caused most illness; now science tells us that loneliness/feeling isolated is even worse; community is the the prescription; check out the Rat Park Experiment to learn about the effect of isolation on rats.

Self-employed/entrepreneurs having a different view of money; the corporate answer is "throw money" at problems; where Raj wanted all the dollars he spent to come home with friends.

Fun discussion about meditation; interesting experiences, benefits, and the pros and cons for paying for meditation training; you can learn to meditate without paying money; but some people may get the benefit of having "skin in the game" if they pay $X for training in meditation

Immortality is a life goal!  Kinda of a joke; but really talk about life extension, the singularity and in the future life may become more "optional" than mandatory

How to use "Card Against Mundanity" in a team building workshop to help people connect and create deeper relationships

Wanted to do a TEDx speech and wanted a topic with real impact; followed "grounded research"; let the data lead you to the conclusions rather than having a theory and prove or disprove it

Found project "Aristotle" which was Goggle's attempt answer the question; How do we build the perfect team?  How do we re-invent the company to increase everything across the board?

One key finding is that a team of ivy league super stars doesn't make a high performance team

The #1 key factor required found universally in all high performing teams was "psychological safety" which includes 1)  vulnerability,  2) caring;  3) sharing; knowing people on a deep personal level

People can throw out crazy ideas and questions; and those are not only supported; but the group actually wants and encourages team members to share them

Teams of average people with psychological safety consistently out perform teams of "superstars"

In traditional teams with "super stars" you may have 1 or 2 leaders generating all the ideas in a group of 10; when you have 10 "regular folks with psychological safety you are getting 10 people working in a true collaboration

Senior people in leadership roles have less self-awareness and almost always assume they are right; where as average people are more open to thinking they might be wrong

Google this:  Harvard debate team lost to a team of prison inmates

People believe that trust leads to vulnerability; the opposite is true; sharing vulnerability leads to building trust

Once trust and friendships are established in teams, people are motivated and inspired to work harder to avoid disappointing their teammates and friends; they do this because they know their teammates care about them personally and professionally

Professor Arthur Aron 1997 asked the question:  "How can we enable people to become fast friends?"  54 grad students played a question and answer game for 45 minutes; 30% said they made closer relationships than they ever had in their lives

No one questions a leader if they drive a company to earn $1 billion; no one asks the question; do your employees like each other

Part of the magic of the "game" is that the cards are random and it's not a stranger or someone you don't like asking the questions, it's just a random card in a game, so the fight or flight mechanism is bypassed automatically and people feel safe to share

A highly developed skill can hide a lack of self-awareness; like a great sales person is really not a very good manager but they get by because of their high skill in sales; a person who is more self-aware and socially aware may not be a great manager but will be aware and open enough to learn from others what corrections need to be made

A leader with low self awareness asks for help to improve performance; the team says the boss doesn't listen.  What doesn't work is just tell the boss that ...
