Abdel means servant of God in Arabic. Abel is the name on his Portuguese papers. Keita (Queta) carries the weight of the thirteenth-century Mali Empire. Tavares is what colonisation left behind. He is made of all four.

Born in Guinea-Bissau and now based between Lisbon and London, Abdel  Queta Tavares is a photographer and visual artist. He survived the 1998 civil war at six years old. He saved his school lunch money to buy his first camera at sixteen. A few years after moving to London, he found his own face on every Underground station in the city, part of a Taylor Wessing prize-winning portrait he never knew was being entered.

The red hat came from a carnival shop in Lisbon. The wigs were sold out. He bought the last hat on the shelf. It became his signature, his protection, his way of being seen.

En grandissant, elle traverse un renversement radical : d'une enfance privilégiée, première de la classe, polo Lacoste et piano dans la chambre, à une adolescence de grande précarité, un hôtel, deux petits frères à charge, la hypokhâgne à tenir en même temps. C'est dans cet écart que quelque chose s'est construit. L'école comme seule bouée. Une humilité apprise à la dure. Et le refus de laisser les circonstances écrire à sa place.

À travers la musique, ses vinyles d'Abdullah Ibrahim, les matins avec The Pharcyde, la poésie de Nikki Giovanni pour rester vivante. Et à travers l'écriture, Katia construit une pensée sur ce qu'elle appelle l'Atlantique noir : cet espace en mouvement entre l'Afrique de l'Ouest, les Antilles et l'Europe, où l'identité se forge sans jamais se figer.

Elle parle aussi des femmes-territoires. Ces figures féminines qui portent des mondes entiers, transmettent autant des forces que des fractures, et que son roman refuse de sanctifier. Et d'un panafricanisme qu'elle veut ancrer dans le présent, loin des discours utopiques sur la jeunesse africaine.

Une conversation musicale et sans concession, sur ce que cela demande de porter une histoire composite, et de trouver, enfin, sa voix fondamentale.
