He served in various leadership roles in AME congregations in both Atlanta and Chicago, but left pastoral ministry in 2006 to work in higher education. A native of Englewood, New Jersey, Johnson was a track and football standout in high school and later attended the University of Idaho, where he graduated in 1965.
