Earlier this year, Fionnuala "Finn" Fisk organised an anthology zine project as a goodbye gift before she moved out of Vienna, Austria. But in the wake of the Trump Administration's renewed efforts to harm people in her home country, the project evolved into a larger push to support those in need. 

This conversation spans the unique way the project used art, the reason a TTRPG zine is well suited to fundraising for charity, and the strange ways that art can be interpreted by many different people.

Alex here! Today, I'm sharing the first episode of Dice Exploder's Third Season, a discussion on the Risk Sheet from Psi*Run by Meguey and Vincent Baker.

Dice Exploder is a podcast that invites a different co-host to bring a game mechanic on and discuss why it works, or even why it doesn't! It's been an awesome podcast so far, super educational for a new designer like myself. The podcast's community has also been really supportive and have given me lots of ideas worth exploring in my own projects.

I'm stoked to give you the chance to listen to this episode while I keep gearing up for the future of Wait, Roll That Again! this year. Stay tuned!

On the season 3 premiere, I’m joined by John Harper, designer of many games featured on past episodes of Dice Exploder including Blades in the Dark, Lasers & Feelings, and Agon 2e.

John brought in the Psi*Run risk sheet, a fairly complex dice resolution mechanic, known generically as Otherkind Dice. The risk sheet is such an elegant piece of design, packing essentially a whole game onto a single sheet of paper, and being so clear in both how it works and how you might tear it apart for your own ends. If you’re a new designer, or even just looking to get back in touch with the basics, John and I agree that hacking this thing is a great place to look.
