This BBC look into The Life of Tove Jansson is quite interesting. Definitely worth a watch! This compilation from Moomin.com pairs nicely with it.

And finally, we somehow chanced into this episode coming out near Moomin’s Day. To celebrate Moomin’s Day, The Comics Journal published a nice interview with Drawn and Quarterly Executive Editor Tom Devlin, discussing the publisher’s decision to repackage and republish the Moomin strips.

July 08, 2024So, We Had an Episode Ready …
For various logistical reasons, this month’s episode of Waiting on the Trade looked like it might be delayed. We’d recorded a discussion of Death: The Deluxe Edition with our friend Mike Drew, but editing that discussion into decent shape was proving difficult (due to issues with the recording). Pat, however, being the champion that he is, almost had the episode ready to go – and that’s when the recent sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman dropped.
I read a host of articles about the allegations. I don’t think there’s enough information out there yet to wholeheartedly believe or disbelieve them. I honestly won’t be surprised if they turn out to be true or false. The fact that Gaiman, a 60-something-year-old man, engaged in a sexual relationship with his 23-year-old nanny within hours of meeting her is off-putting in and of itself.
Pat finished editing our episode today. We then discussed whether we wanted to release it. We decided that we did not. Partly because the episode wasn’t our best effort, partly because the recent news about Gaiman took the wind out of our sails. So, no Waiting on the Trade this month. We’ll be back next month with a discussion of Eight Billion Genies. In the meantime, if you want to hear us talk about the quandary of separating art from artist, I’d recommend our episode on Nextwave. That discussion remains relevant and, unfortunately, I imagine it will for quite some time.

Artist Roc Upchurch was arrested for domestic assault during the book’s initial run. You can learn a bit more about that here and here.
Upchurch and Wiebe did eventually come back for a Rat Queens finale. All published Rat Queens stories (including the “never-to-be-reprinted” issue 16) are collected in the Rat Queens Omnibus, which has a stupid tentacle cover because of course it does. It’s like the creators didn’t even read their own book.
On a more upbeat note, here’s Sawyer IRL.
Rat Queens did win a GLAAD award. I didn’t make that up!
