Apple's scary warnings about the risks created by the adoption of these new EU measures are frankly hilarious, given that basically this exact same system—notarization, "sideloading,” alternative app stores—has been in place on the Mac for *years*.

Quite simply, I don't think any app developer with Free or Freemium apps in their portfolio can accept Apple's new business terms without the risk of being bankrupted. And as a result, that makes this specific implementation of the Core Technology Fee unworkable. I fully expect changes to be required before the E.U. can approve a solution here

[Spotify CEO slams Apple's App Store changes; Apple fires back [U]](https://9to5mac.com/2024/01/26/spotify-ceo-responds-to-apples-app-store-changes-extortion-plain-and-simple/)
Additionally, in my read, the way this new fee structure breakdown would affect an app like Spotify:
• External purchase link clicks capture 17% of transactions for 7 days, payable to Apple
• Spotify would also have to pay 50c per first instance of a download, reinstall, or update per user per year, which could be a hundred million dollars in extra fees
I don't think this is workable here either, and as Spotify is a big driver behind the E.U. legislation, some changes are gonna be needed

The irony is that Apple's sulky language about complying with the DMA is *exactly* the same as Facebook's sulky language about complying with ATT. It's almost as if massive companies really hate it when they can't abuse users

If #Apple continues on this path I’m going to have to switch back to Android. The idea that they deserve a fee from developers for people simply running programs on their operating system is unhinged. The App Store fee is justified because it’s a distribution channel. But whatever this is, is nonsense. https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/111824854511299605
