Wake Up Kids: Science News for Curious Minds (Ages 7–9)
It’s Wednesday, 29 July 2026, and host Ticky Tocket is here with big, friendly science news to brighten your morning.
Space surprise: Scientists spotted a supermassive “runaway” black hole roaming near the edge of its galaxy—far from the middle where these giants usually live. They couldn’t see the black hole itself, but they caught a huge flash of light when it pulled a nearby star apart. A super-smart computer found that one special flash among about half a million twinkles in the sky! This hint means there may be many more quiet, wandering black holes out there, waiting to be found.
Volcano world: Meet Io, a moon of Jupiter and the most volcano-filled place in our solar system. NASA’s Juno spacecraft flew past with a “magic thermometer” that can feel just under the ground. It discovered Io heats up quickly a short way beneath the surface. Why? Jupiter’s strong gravity squeezes and stretches Io as it orbits—like your hands warming up when you rub them together! Parts of Io are smooth and soft, more like fluffy volcanic ash than hard rock, and studying it helps scientists learn more about volcanoes on Earth.
Dino in a drawer: Scientists took a fresh look inside a museum drawer and realized a dusty old fossil was actually a dinosaur—the first ever found from Antarctica! This shows some dinosaurs lived in chilly polar places, not just warm jungles. Amazing discoveries can hide in plain sight, just waiting for curious eyes.
Lindfield weather: A chilly 9°C this morning. Expect mostly sunny skies with a few fluffy clouds and a high near 18°C—though clouds and a little light rain could sneak in later, with temperatures closer to 16°C. Layer up, and keep a raincoat handy just in case.
Thought for the day: Stay curious—amazing things can hide in unexpected places. The good things inside you may be quiet and hidden, but they help you shine. Learn, create, and give someone a warm, kind boost today.
