Episode 22: WAKE UP, You're Having Another Nightmare
Have you ever had a recurring nightmare that you couldn't get to go away or found yourself re-living traumatic events over and over with little relief?
2020 has kind of felt like a nightmare for many with all the quarantining, social distancing and self-isolation. Unfortunately, these factors haven't helped those suffering from PTSD in our country, both among our veterans, active duty soldiers and even civilians. The sad news is that about 20-22 veterans commit suicide every day in our country due to PTSD and depression.
On this episode we discuss the very serious topic of PTSD with Retired Master Sergeant and Author, Nate Aguinaga, and Army National Guard Chaplin, Major Lance Sellon, who hosts a Soldier Care 53 forum online. In spite of the stark realities, veterans and active duty soldiers have plenty of reason for hope and our desire at Dudeology is that this episode will help encourage those suffering from PTSD.
Nate Aguinaga's third book, WAKE UP, You're Having Another Nightmare addresses head on his experience, symptoms and struggles with PTSD and the positive outlets available to cope and live with it. In Nate's words, "make no mistake about it, I am not crazy!" This is the final installment of his three-book series, detailing the events that led up to his diagnosis.
Hopefully, Nate's personal experiences in dealing with post traumatic stress disorder and Lance's helpful insights as a Chaplin can help soldiers and civilians alike to unlock your own struggle with PTSD. PTSD is not just combat related...your story matters. We hope this episode allows you to give yourself permission to talk it out, work it out and find support. In fact, give yourself permission to stop calling it a disorder and start calling it post traumatic stress response (PTSR).
Nathan Aguinaga is a retired Master Sergeant who served 20 years Active Duty in the U.S. Army. He served as a Light Infantryman with additional skill identifiers as Airborne, Ranger, Jumpmaster, and Drill Sergeant. During his 20 years of service, Nathan has served three combat deployments to the Middle East which include Operation Desert Storm and two tours of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
If you are a veteran, active duty military or civilian struggling with PTSD and/or depression carve out some time and give yourself permission to listen to this episode.
