Episode 28: Identity Inventory with Watts Dantzler
On this episode we talk with Watts Dantzler, a 6-8, former Offensive Tackle for the University of Georgia and NFL prospect for the Jacksonville Jaguars. At the peak of his football career his weight was over 350-pounds but the now 240-pound Dantzler runs Ultramarathons.
Dantzler walks us through his life growing up, building his identity around football and future highs that he would achieve that most only dream of. But just like any good story with highs, there are also challenges and lows. Sometimes your path in life can change in an instant like it did for Dantzler one day on a Jacksonville Jaguars practice field. Dantzler opens up about these challenges and how he took an inventory of his life...he took a look at his mental health and physical health. He knew that he needed to make some changes to get away from identifying as a football player and find his new mission, his new identity as a man.
After taking inventory his his health, Dantzler went on a kick to lose more than 100 pounds. He also caught the running bug...but not the 5k kind...the marathon and ultramarathon kind! Dantzler, living in Atlanta, recently completed the 100-mile Georgia Jewel ultramarathon that starts and finishes at the Dalton Convention Center and is the longest-standing 100-mile race in the state and includes more than 13,000 feet of elevation on the challenging Pinhoti Trail.
Dantzler's goals are not only to live a healthy and active lifestyle but also to be used by God to inspire other dudes. Give this episode a listen and be inspired to do more and be better.

Episode 26: The Punisher: Ultrarunning with Ryan Dexter
On this episode, we talk with Ryan "The Punisher" Dexter about his background, how he got into Ultrarunning and training to go further than you ever thought possible. Even if you're not a runner, or maybe you're not the fastest or maybe you've never done a marathon, this episode is still for you. With any endeavor in life, it starts with our mindset...what The Punisher calls planting "The Maybe Seed." Ryan talks about his journey from his first 5k running around a lake to when it all clicked for him. Though he may have never been the fastest, he always thought "Maybe" in the back of his mind which led him to finding ultras.
The Dudeologist talk with The Punisher about how regular dudes can open their minds to possibility that they too can do big things. For The Punisher, that thing was Ultramarathons. If you are not familiar with Ultramarathons, its any race longer than a marathon, but for The Punisher, it meant 150 and 200 mile races. The Punisher has done all kinds of Ultramarathons including the McNaughton, the Frozen Otter, the Barkley and many others. He is best known for his attempts and eventual winning of the McNaughton, a race David Goggins also won and set the course record, a year The Punisher finished second (Jump on Youtube and look up David Goggins Human Machine). However, in 2009, The Punisher returned and finished in first place
Today, with more than 80 marathons and ultra races under his belt, Ryan "The Punisher" Dexter lives in Florida and still enjoys running and being active with his family. We hope this episode inspires you to set lofty goals and open your mind to all kinds of possibilities. Plant The Maybe Seed, sign up for an event, train hard and go do it! Episode 22: WAKE UP, You're Having Another Nightmare
Have you ever had a recurring nightmare that you couldn't get to go away or found yourself re-living traumatic events over and over with little relief?
2020 has kind of felt like a nightmare for many with all the quarantining, social distancing and self-isolation. Unfortunately, these factors haven't helped those suffering from PTSD in our country, both among our veterans, active duty soldiers and even civilians. The sad news is that about 20-22 veterans commit suicide every day in our country due to PTSD and depression.
On this episode we discuss the very serious topic of PTSD with Retired Master Sergeant and Author, Nate Aguinaga, and Army National Guard Chaplin, Major Lance Sellon, who hosts a Soldier Care 53 forum online. In spite of the stark realities, veterans and active duty soldiers have plenty of reason for hope and our desire at Dudeology is that this episode will help encourage those suffering from PTSD.
Nate Aguinaga's third book, WAKE UP, You're Having Another Nightmare addresses head on his experience, symptoms and struggles with PTSD and the positive outlets available to cope and live with it. In Nate's words, "make no mistake about it, I am not crazy!" This is the final installment of his three-book series, detailing the events that led up to his diagnosis.
Hopefully, Nate's personal experiences in dealing with post traumatic stress disorder and Lance's helpful insights as a Chaplin can help soldiers and civilians alike to unlock your own struggle with PTSD. PTSD is not just combat related...your story matters. We hope this episode allows you to give yourself permission to talk it out, work it out and find support. In fact, give yourself permission to stop calling it a disorder and start calling it post traumatic stress response (PTSR).
Nathan Aguinaga is a retired Master Sergeant who served 20 years Active Duty in the U.S. Army. He served as a Light Infantryman with additional skill identifiers as Airborne, Ranger, Jumpmaster, and Drill Sergeant. During his 20 years of service, Nathan has served three combat deployments to the Middle East which include Operation Desert Storm and two tours of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
If you are a veteran, active duty military or civilian struggling with PTSD and/or depression carve out some time and give yourself permission to listen to this episode.

Episode 21 :: Marines on Movies: Heartbreak Ridge
In the movie Heartbreak Ridge (1986), we are introduced to Marine Sgt. Thomas Highway (Clint Eastwood). Clint Eastwood may possibly be the best choice for a Marine Corps Gunny of any actor ever other than Ronald Lee Ermey of Full Metal Jacket. His killer one liners are remembered and quoted to this day.
On this episode, we have our resident Marine Corps Sniper, Dennis "Denny" McCaffrey, for a second time to review the movie Heartbreak Ridge as the anniversary of the invasion of Grenada just past. The Dudeologist discuss "Fact or Fiction" with Denny while also getting tons of great stories about his time in the Marines as continued from Episode 3.
