On the night of my 40th, one month ago to the day, I went on a midnight walkabout in and around Sydney’s Darling Harbour. I was very happy to be here; a city just over the ‘ditch’ from NZ that had somehow taken me nine years to visit. And, there was a lot I wanted to mull over.
Hours earlier I had been enjoying a dual piano orchestra in the famous Sydney Opera House, but I found myself wondering whether I’d need to pick up the violin again to truly appreciate their music and craft. As I traveled down the dark harbour blocks, I was questioning whether I should have studied architecture as the only way to appreciate these sights more too — like a scholarly fear of missing out of some deeper meaning. Wanting to process these thoughts got me moving.
▶️ What we’re walking and talking through today
* The compulsion to participate: Wrestling with that urge to turn every passive joy into a new project as if we need to earn the right to appreciate them.
* Literally looking up: Embracing the appearance of being a tourist so that one can admire the spaces you’re in and unashamedly take in the view.
* Resisting the urge to produce ‘content’: Noticing the impulse to turn every quiet thought or enjoyable moment into something to be shared.

When comedian Taylor Ruddle and I clipped the mics to our chests and zipped up our hoodies, we weren't sure where our conversation or feet were going to take us, but we walked and wandered into topics and places I couldn't have planned any better. If we've learned anything, it's that seeing something new requires little more than taking a slow stroll and looking up from your phone.
▶️ What we’re walking and talking through today:
* Noticing the birds, back alleys, and art we've been blind to in our home towns
* Balancing energy between the four 'light bulbs' in our lives: job, family, health, and hobbies
* Reclaiming our time and joy by deliberately re-introducing analogue frictions

Do you regularly find yourself sprinting out of your house half-dressed to get to your bus or an appointment on time like I do? Do your work meetings tend to start one minute after the hour rather than one minute before? Are you the one causing this or is it someone like me in your team? Sorry! I’m working on it 😝.
I have lived that rushed, “I’ve still got time!” life for so long that I adjusted to it rather than changing it. But, thanks to a late-stage ADHD diagnosis a few years back, I’ve got a whole new toolbox of tips and tricks I’ve been testing to flip the script.
▶️ What we’re exploring in today’s Walk & Talk audio log:
* Getting into your car and joining a meeting takes longer than you think, and I didn’t know that was the problem until I started timing myself
* When I stop treating being ahead of schedule like I’ve got free time to do “just one more thing”, I actually show up on time. Wild!
* How being late for my ADHD diagnosis told the psychiatrist everything they needed to know

For years, I was obsessed with maintaining an inbox zero to quiet the anxiety of unread notifications, but I’ve been curiously finding peace in letting the emails pile up. This unintentional batching has actually protected my focus and given me a way to handle life admin in one fell swoop.
▶️ What I'm thinking through today:
* The hidden cost of constant context switching, even when you're just knocking out quick, "two-minute" tasks.
* Unlearning the anxious urge to clear notifications immediately.
* Reclaiming focus time for creative projects and family by saving non-urgent emails for a single, intentional block of time.

This is the start of something beautiful — or, a short-lived flight of midnight fancy and distraction from a dozen other things I should have been doing instead of making this new podcast.
