SCRIPTURE: James 5:13-20
SHOW NOTES: The book of James has been an encouraging and challenging study. As brothers and sisters, we do not want to become stagnant, stale, or fall away from the Lord. Our heart’s desire is to grow and have a vibrant Walk with God. There are people all around us who are hurting, sick, and facing times of trials. We are called to stand with one another. Pray for one another. Praise and rejoice with one another.
Do you have someone in your life that you meet with regularly for accountability, encouragement, and prayer? The Lord prompts us to invest time of prayer for those who are hurting, struggling, or facing discouragement. We can praise the Lord for the victories, gifts, and spiritual blessings in each other’s lives. James instructs us, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” What an amazing privilege!

SCRIPTURE: James 5:1-12
SHOW NOTES: James’ book is clearly challenging “brothers and sisters” to live in a way that pleases the Lord. Now in the first 6 verses of chapter 5, he seems to shift his message to those who are living in a selfish and prideful manner. James uses strong words, and he wants these people to realize there will be consequences for their self-centered lifestyle. He declares that they should “weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon them” because they will ultimately face this powerful Judge. Considering these truths, what are believers to do? “Brothers and sisters,” we must wait patiently during times of suffering. James reminds us of the prophets and Job – each of these people faced great hardships, trials, and much suffering. But James ends with these hope-filled words for believers. “You have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.”

SCRIPTURE: James 4:1-17
SHOW NOTES: James continues to share practical instruction with brothers and sisters in the early Church. How should they live in a way pleasing to God? As Jews, they listened to the teaching of the Law, celebrated the Annual Feasts, and brought their sacrifices to the Temple. James presents this basic choice for all believers. Will we live according to our fleshly desires, or will we humble ourselves and submit to God?
James cares for these people and he desires to see them live in a way that will please the Lord and result in God’s generous gift of grace. This chapter calls us to consider our position before the Lord with these imperative commands – Submit and draw near to God. Turn away from the devil. Present clean hands and a pure heart. Mourn and weep with true sorrow and regret for my sin. Humbly submit to the Lord.

“The names of God are significant,” says Brenda McCord, tonight's devotion leader. “As individuals, we are each known by our different names – formal, casual, and nicknames. God also has many names. This study offers specific Bible verses to help us better grasp the importance of God’s many names – and enrich our walk with Him. We’ll get to better understand Him – and ourselves.”

SCRIPTURE: James 3:13-18
SHOW NOTES: James asks this question, “Who is wise and understanding among you?” He points to one’s conduct, good works, and the discipline of his tongue. The Hebrew word for wisdom is chokma. Wise living means applying Biblical principles to everyday life. It is the ability to view life from God’s perspective and then order our life according to His will. James will contrast earthly wisdom (vv. 14-16) with heavenly wisdom (v. 17). He wants us to clearly see the difference and to seek “wisdom from above.” Do I turn to the Lord and ask Him to give me the wisdom I need today? “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God who gives freely.” And for those who walk in wisdom “a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”
SONG: "Perfect Wisdom of Our God" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSnzYnOe6kI
SCRIPTURE: James 3:1-12
SHOW NOTES: How should we live out our faith in everyday life? James is very specific in the opening verses of chapter 3. He wants us to know teachers of God’s Word will be held accountable and he reminds us that we all make mistakes. We will not be perfect, but our desire should be spiritual growth and maturity.
Now, James points to the control of our tongues. In verse 5 he writes, “So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.” When the tongue is not carefully constrained or guarded, it will get us into trouble. James takes us to the heart of our Christian walk. How do we use our tongue?
