What are the qualities and character traits of those you consider to be your very best friends? Once in a while as I read the Bible, suddenly there’s a glimpse into God’s heart for humanity and today we’ve come to one of my favorites as we near the end of our long journey with the old Jewish prophet Isaiah. Isaiah 66:1 says: “This is what the LORD says: ‘Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool.”

Have you ever looked through a strong telescope far out across the horizon or even looked up into a clear night sky? It’s amazing isn’t it, to see through a telescope what you can’t see with your normal sight. Now, what if we could do that with TIME? What if you could see tomorrow or next year or 100 years from now? We’ve spent the past several weeks looking at messages the Jewish prophet Isaiah received from God about 2700 years ago. Many of those messages described events which were futuristic for Isaiah but are past history for us.  But in Isaiah 65 God gave Mr. Isaiah a vision for a future that is yet far, far out in our future, did you know that? Isaiah wrote as the Spirit of God led him. God said: “See I will create new heavens and a new earth.”

Our world is now profoundly affected by something called “AI”...’artificial intelligence’, particularly in the world of technology driven information. While some is helpful, a new challenge has arisen and that is trying to discern if what you see or hear is reality and truth or artificial information produced by ‘AI’. People are discovering the value of frequent ‘reality checks’ to be sure they can discern when they are dealing with “AI”.  Amazingly, I see this warning from God throughout the Bible! These famous words of Jesus are a divine ‘reality check’ to a world claiming many roads to God and many different truths: “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except by Me.” (John 14:6)

This morning, I read a very powerful statement which stunned me! It has caused me to pause and deeply reflect on what I have seen in my world all my life and what I know to be true. The statement, written 2700 years ago by a Jewish prophet named Isaiah, is found in Isaiah 64:4 in the Bible: “Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides YOU, who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him.” (Is.64:4)

While the actual inauguration day of the newly elected American President is two months from now, already there are many people wringing their hands in worry, and some are predicting disaster for America and the world! I wonder what you are feeling and thinking as you consider the future in view of what is happening this week in America? Do you foresee great days or disaster ahead? And how do you anticipate your personal life will be different two or ten years from now as a result of the election in America this week?

Today is the ‘day after’! The day after what I called “Decision Day” in America!  I am writing this several days BEFORE the election so I have no idea what the actual election results will be as I write. One thing I can safely predict: NO MATTER WHO is declared to be the election winner and no matter how they arrive at the final vote tabulation and verification of the Electoral College results, there will be a great many people disappointed today both in America and the rest of the world.  So, it raises some important questions for us today, questions like: how does a person live a God honoring life if they believe the leaders of their country are less than honorable; or hold values contrary to theirs and even contrary to God’s values as described in the Bible?

Here is it, November 5th, 2024. We have finally arrived at “Decision Day” in America. This date has been marked on the world calendar for a long time. Leaders of many nations are watching closely to see who the next President of the United States will be and what that will mean for relations with their nations. Stock markets around the world are watching, seeking to project the economic impact globally of the decision Americans will make today. Militaries around the world stand at the ready awaiting word from their leader in response to America’s decision. Billions of people, of all ages and nationalities will be listening to hear the result of this election, believing their nation, their city and quite possibly their lives will be impacted by this “Decision Day”. And of course, God is watching!

So let me ask you, on this eve of the US elections… if Jesus were physically here among us, as He was in Israel 2000 years ago, how many people do you think would seek time with Jesus today asking Him to help them navigate how to live a God honoring life in such turbulent, confusing, morally adrift times we live in today? Over the past week we’ve been carefully working our way through one of the most powerful messages God ever gave to humanity for navigating life in our sinful world, especially at turbulent times like now.

I begin with a question for all of us, no matter where you live in the world, or your age or your marital status or your gender: what would it take for your town or city to become a safe, beautiful city where anyone could walk the streets of your city at any time day or night without concern for their safety? What would it take for your city to be clean and attractive and functioning well and affordable in every season of the year?  Yesterday we began looking at a remarkable statement which describes the difference God’s people should be making wherever they live. Isaiah 61:4 says: “They will REBUILD the ancient ruins and RESTORE the places long devastated; they will RENEW the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.”

Today we begin a new month, November! Usually the sound of that word, “November” brings to our minds wonderful things like Thanksgiving family gatherings and good food, but this year, it also brings a caution, doesn’t it? We’re in the final days of a frenetic American election cycle which has been as chaotic as many thought it would be, and when further complicated by wars in Ukraine and Israel; rapidly rising cost of living; famine in some parts of the world and even nuclear war tensions, this November may be unlike any other. Are you ready?
