... But word had since come to Paul that false teachers had followed him to those towns and brought contrary teachings which led those new Christians into great confusion. In some cases, they were abandoning their faith in Jesus and returning to their old traditions and false religions which had held them in bondage.  Paul is praying, preparing to write, wanting to be sure his mind and heart are clear for the Spirit to speak just the right words to Paul which then when written, will convict and encourage those Gentiles to return to Jesus. Paul picks up his stylus... "It is for FREEDOM that Christ has set us free! Stand firm then and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." (Gal. 5:1)

I wonder if you've ever found yourself discouraged because a person you were helping to grow and develop in their maturity has stumbled and retreated back into some former ways of life which are self-destructive? Perhaps you were helping someone kick the smoking habit, or get off alcohol or drugs, or maybe break their gambling habit? It's so hard to watch them fall back into the chains of their past when they were making such good progress, would you agree?

 May I invite you to return with me to Syrian Antioch and the little house where Paul is writing his first letter we today know as Galatians, in our Bible. I left you yesterday reflecting on one very, very powerful statement which Paul wrote: "When the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive the full rights of sons." (Gal. 4:4,5) Today let's dig into the last phrase of that powerful statement.

Occasionally we hear a statement, perhaps it's an announcement or a declaration, that is so powerful it simply stops us in our tracks. I left you this weekend, in a small house in Syrian Antioch, about the year 48ad, with a famous man, the apostle Paul, as he is writing the first of 13 letters we have in the New Testament of the Bible, which he claims to have penned. He does NOT claim to be the author of these books, rather, he is the scribe, receiving the words he writes directly from God.

Perhaps you've heard the phrase 'perfect timing'? Normally it refers to some circumstances or events which occur at just the right time to accomplish something significant. I'm sure you've had several such 'perfect timing' experiences in your life, I know I sure have! Did you know it happens often with God as He deals with us, the human race, in our very complex world? Come, let's rejoin a small group of people sitting in a little house in Syrian Antioch about the year 48ad as the man known as the apostle Paul is writing his first letter. That letter has been preserved and copied and translated so that no matter where you live in the world today, it is probably available to you in your language and is known as the letter "Galatians" in the Bible.

I wonder what the most powerful expression of "INCLUSION" is that you've ever experienced? Perhaps it was your grandparents explaining to you that you are 'included' in a wonderful family with a proud heritage. If you are adopted, that was an especially powerful moment of 'inclusion', wasn't it?  Or maybe it was the strong sense of being included on an athletic team that worked very hard and the synergy of your shared efforts and skill won the competitions. Or maybe it was being part of a wonderful business organization or a great church or being an alumnus of a school, you loved, or even being part of a wonderful neighborhood of people who cared deeply for each other. "Inclusion" has in recent times become a powerful political word, but long, long before that word had political clout, God used that word as He referred to the descendants or Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as "My chosen people". Do you remember?

I wonder how many times today you will find yourself making choices based on the laws of the land in which you live. If you're in an automobile today... what laws will govern how you drive? If you engage in any financial transaction, what laws will govern the amount of tax added to the value of your purchase? If you enter any building, what laws govern the construction of the buildings where you live so they are safe? And have you noticed that for every law, I mean every law, every person who faces that law has a choice... obey the law or disregard the law? And today, as you and I go through this day, we will face the same choice many times... obey the laws or disregard the laws?

Do you know anyone who loves to ask questions?  Most people like to talk, sharing their opinion, whether they are well informed or not about the topic. But there are then those rare people who have the unusual ability to ask questions in conversation and thus learn the opinions of other people. Those who are really good at this ask the questions in such a kind and normal way, people share very openly, sometimes not even realizing how transparent they have become! And then there are some other people who also love to ask questions, but the manner in which they ask seems more like an attorney probing deeply and it feels more like an interrogation than a conversation.

Have you noticed that no matter where you live in the world, no matter what culture is most familiar for you, no matter what language is your native language, no matter your age or your gender or your marital status, CONFUSION is a common problem for every person in the world? We try our best to understand what is intended by the words spoken especially when combined with tone of voice and body language, but sometimes we wrinkle our brow, scratch our chin and simply are confused. In times like that we hunger for one thing... CLARITY! Clear truth erases confusion...at least it should.

I wonder if you've ever had the privilege of being part of a delegation sent out to bring a specific message to a group of people who were anxiously awaiting the message? This weekend I left you in Jerusalem, in the year 48ad, after a historic, landmark decision had been reached in what many call the "Jerusalem Council". If you've been with us you recall Barnabas and Paul had come to Jerusalem from Syrian Antioch traveling with a few Gentile Christians. They met in Jerusalem with Peter, James, John and the other apostles, and several of the elders of the Jewish Jesus movement there.  The issue at hand was the need for a clear answer to a fundamental question: What must a person do for God to forgive their sin?
