This episode of Spider-Man: The Animated Series, which introduces Big Wheel and Rocket Racer, has been often regarded as one of the show's worst. But it's also one of very few instances of a cartoon then (and even now) directly confronting institutional racism from a Black perspective, and in this case deals with those experiences in a surprisingly pointed and even elegant way. "Rocket Racer" is good, actually!

In the conclusion of this Spider-Man: The Animated Series two-parter, Doc Ock has wiped Spidey’s memory, and it’s up to eight-year-old badass Taina, her cabbie friend Mousie, and their cavalry of New Yorkers to save him! The Sins of the Fathers arc of Spider-Man: The Animated Series begins proper as the iconic and legendary Madame Web enters the fold! We chat about her spot-on design and Joan Lee’s stellar performance in this strong episode, which also features extended Spidey origin flashbacks (complete with multiple outfits!), a great Doc Ock-centered conflict, and mystery over who, exactly, Taina’s voice actor is.
