What does true glory actually look like?

In John 12, Jesus enters Jerusalem to the sound of cheering crowds, waving palm branches, and cries of “Hosanna.” From the outside, it looks like the high point of His public ministry. The people are ready for a conquering king.

But Jesus has something very different in mind.

When He says, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified,” He is talking about the cross.

In this sermon, we explore how Jesus redefines glory through sacrifice, submission, and suffering. A grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies. A troubled soul submits to the Father. A king is lifted up—not on a throne, but on a cross.

And if that is what glory looks like for Jesus, then it also reshapes what following Him looks like for us.

Jesus calls His people to surrender their lives, walk in the light, and live for the kind of fruit that comes when our lives are given over to the purposes of God.

After eleven chapters of John’s Gospel and seven miraculous signs, the evidence surrounding Jesus has reached a breaking point. People are being forced to decide what they believe about Him.

John 12 presents three very different responses.

The religious leaders hate Jesus so deeply that after He raises Lazarus from the dead, they decide they need to kill Lazarus too. Mary responds in the opposite way, pouring out an extraordinarily expensive perfume in an extravagant act of love and worship. And between those two responses stands Judas—a man who appears to love Jesus while secretly loving the world more.

Why do some people see overwhelming evidence for Jesus and still refuse to believe?

John 11 ends with one of the most striking contrasts in the Gospel of John. After Jesus publicly raises Lazarus from the dead, many witnesses believe in Him—but others immediately report what happened to the Pharisees. The religious leaders do not deny the miracle. Instead, they decide Jesus must die.

In John 11:45–57, we examine the ingredients of unbelief. The problem is not primarily a lack of evidence. Unbelief is often driven by fear, a desire to preserve our way of life, and a preference for the approval of people over the approval of God.

But even the unbelief and evil intentions of Jesus’ enemies cannot derail God’s purposes. When Caiaphas argues that one man should die for the people, he unknowingly describes God’s plan of salvation: Jesus would die as a substitute so that sinners could live.

This passage reminds us that the cross was never an accident or a backup plan. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who willingly lays down His life for His sheep, the Lamb of God who takes away sin, and the only object worthy of our faith.

Death is one of the most painful realities every person eventually faces. Even when we know death is coming, the loss of someone we love can permanently change us. John 11 shows us that Jesus does not stand at a distance from that pain.

When Jesus arrives at the tomb of Lazarus, He already knows exactly what He is about to do. He knows Lazarus will be raised from the dead—and yet Jesus weeps. He grieves with Mary and Martha, and He is deeply moved by the devastation that sin and death have brought into the world.

What do you do when Jesus doesn't make sense?

Can a Christian lose their salvation?

In John 10, Jesus makes one of His clearest and most comforting promises: “My sheep hear my voice… I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.”

Jesus describes the world as a dangerous place inhabited by spiritual wolves. Sin, temptation, deception, and death threaten the sheep—and we cannot protect or save ourselves. We need a shepherd.

In John 10:11–18, Jesus declares, “I am the good shepherd.” He proves this claim by laying down His life for His sheep, knowing them personally, and gathering people from every nation into one flock.

Unlike hired hands who abandon the sheep when following them becomes costly, Jesus willingly faced our greatest enemy. On the cross, He received the punishment our sins deserved and rose again so that His people could receive forgiveness, righteousness, and eternal life.

This sermon also considers how we can know whether we belong to Jesus’ flock. His sheep know Him, care for one another, seek those who are not yet in the flock, and delight in walking with their Shepherd.

Everyone seems to have a different answer for where the good life is found. We are told to pursue success, pleasure, wealth, achievement, self-improvement, or the approval of others. Yet these competing voices continually promise more than they can deliver.

In John 10:1–10, Jesus makes a striking claim: “I am the gate.” He is not merely offering another strategy for improving our lives. He is claiming to be the only entrance into salvation, security, belonging, and abundant life.

This sermon examines the competing voices that try to lead us, Jesus’ exclusive authority as the gate for the sheep, and what He means when He promises life in abundance. The good life is not found when our circumstances finally become perfect. It is found in knowing Christ.

If you have Christ, you already possess the life that everything else is promising. Do not spend your life searching elsewhere for what you have already been given in Him.
