Ecclesiastes 11:1-6

Matthew 6:9-13

In this chapter, the teacher brings to light the unpredictability of death and how it is the same for all, the good and the evil, and how mysterious the ways of the Lord are. The teacher also tells us what we can learn from death and why it is important, with the example of a living dog being better than a dead lion. For the living know that they shall die and hence the teacher highlights the importance of being happy with what you have and to live in joy, in the word of the Lord, all the days that the Lord has given us. The word of the Lord tells us how through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, we have hope toward his eternal kingdom of which we shall partake.

Ecclesiastes 9:1-12

The teacher helps us see the need for wisdom and righteousness but not to get overly wise and righteous as it does not solve everything, given the complexity of things and the mysterious ways of our Lord. To answer our question that arises, who then shall make it through all this? He that fears God (verse 18) shall come forth  of them all. Seek the Lord more than wisdom and righteousness.

Ecclesiastes 5:8-9; 8:1-15

The word of God speaks to the challenges we face in our current day and provides us with the solution to the problem, to depend on the Lord and to set our heart to seek and rejoice in the Lord. The verses go on to contrast two type of people, one whom the Lord blesses so that they enjoy the fruit of their labor, and the others who with all their heart heap riches, which are then enjoyed by a total stranger.

What is our comfort today? Is it something we own? or Is it our savior and Lord Jesus Christ? If our comfort is in the Lord, who became poor for our sake, then we can live happily, rejoicing, despite the troubles we face economically and politically in this day.

Ecclesiastes 5:10-6:2

What should be our response to the erosion of trust in society’s foundations?

What should you do when you can’t find a “kindred spirit”?

Is there the possibility of a new community?
