In this episode, we will look at the first four of Sen no Rikyu’s Seven Principles.
In “Make the tea good to drink,” we explore the idea that preparing tea is not just about technique, but about considering what kind of tea the guest would truly enjoy.
In “Arrange the charcoal so the water will boil,” we look at the importance of quiet preparation and creating the right timing.
In “Make summer feel cool and winter feel warm,” we touch on the Japanese aesthetic of allowing the guest to feel the season through utensils, flowers, and the atmosphere of the tea room.
And in “Arrange flowers as they appear in nature,” we consider the idea of respecting the natural beauty of the flower, rather than forcing it into a shape that suits us.
Together, these first four principles show us a way of caring for others, sensing the seasons, and allowing what is before us to reveal its own natural beauty.
