This is hopefully the last of the old style of podcasts. I am officially returning to podcasting. Details pertaining to frequency and schedule are being ironed out but the podcast will focus, along with the blog, on historical gaming and New England gaming.

I discuss the podcast’s new direction in this episode alone with some new Flames of War releases and a great deal on pre-ordering the new set of War at Sea titled Fleet Commander, which releases December 7, 2010. Additionally, I explain why I am returning to podcast and discuss my recent guest appearance on Tom Barbalet’s Stone Ape Podcast.

I hope you enjoy Episode 37 of the CWF GameCast and I am eager for your feedback (both positive remarks and constructive criticism). It has been a long time since I’ve done this and I need to get in the hang of things again.

NOTE* My apologies to Tom. At one point during the episode I refer to the Model Rail Radio as Model Rail Railroad. I regret the error.

This is a mini-cast to verbally announce my guest appearance on the Stone Ape Podcast by Tom Barbalet. I discuss how I came to be invited by Tom, who he is and what he does, and also gloss over some of the topics I hope to discuss on the Stone Ape Podcast.

Recently a friend of mine purchased the Space Hulk Limited Edition and invited me to square off in a 1 vs 1 match.  I'm familiar with the second edition of the game and thought it'd be fun to play this limited edition.  It was.

There's been a lot of hype and reviews of the game.  Most of the reviews I've seen have great things to say.  The Table Top Battlefield podcast did an entire episode (Season 3 Episode 19 (listen here)) reviewing the game with several of the hosts declaring it a contender for game of the year.

Playing this with my friend was a lot of fun.  The tiles look nice, the models are expertly sculpted, the printing is good, and game play is a blast.  But, I have one huge concern with this game.  The lack of value.

The game retails for $99 (or $105.19 with tax in Massachusetts).  The price point is too high for this game.

I've shared my sentiments with friends and gamers at my local game store.  Inevitably I'm told "you get over $200 worth of models for just $100" and "what do you expect from a limited edition?"

Yes the models may be "worth" $200 but their dynamic poses and incredible sculpting makes them only usable for Space Hulk.  This game is set in the 40k universe but none of the models can be used in 40k games.  That negates, for me, the "$200 worth of models" argument.

Games Workshop chose to make this a limited edition.  That does not mean the value of this game should automatically increase.  I actually doubt how limited this limited edition will be.  I think sales will be good enough to warrant another production run.  Plus, the cost of plastic molds is incredibly high.  It is bad business for GW to spend so much money on those molds only to use them this once.

The game IS fun.  It is a great way to spend an evening with some friends.  On the surface it is simple but only a cunning mind can make the most out of the game.  But, it is simply too costly.  GW should have priced this game for $50-$75, which is on par with the Assault on Black Reach 40k starter box.

The price point is why I cannot call this game of the year.  It isn't even in the running.  Great games are not only well made and a blast to play.  They have the entire package including an appropriate price for what is provided.  Space Hulk Limited Edition fails in this regard.

Chester French, the famous Harvard duo we first shared with you back in December 2006 with Local Band: Chester French, has released their first music video. The video, which we're sharing below, is on MTV heralding their first major label album due in stores March 31st.

The dynamic duo has turned music on its head with their ironic and inspective lyrics. Nothing about their music, their songs, or them is what it seems except one thing. They're both incredibly nice guys. I've spoken with them through instant chat and e-mail and they're truly delightful. They're friendly and appreciative of the success they're attaining.

Just recently I read an article about Peaches Geldof in Hello! magazine, which naturally discussed Maxwell Drummey, her husband. It is nice to see people grabbing onto love and not letting go like they have. Their music video addresses love and relationships in an interesting way. The lyrics to She Loves Everybody are innocent enough on the surface but the video provides a dichotomy listeners don't get from the song alone.

At the start we see DA in almost cherubic fashion singing about his girl. This girl, the one he loves, then proceeds with masochistic actions. She pummels DA, she busts his lip, and gives him a thrashing. Nothing is safe in the video as even Maxwell, on guitar and drums, is assaulted resulting in the dismemberment of the drum set. Through it all DA manages a smile as his bow tie is violently askew and his brutalized body crumples to the floor. Yet, there is more than the literal meaning in this video. It symbolizes the damage we all inflict and receive in any relationship with the one we love. It shows that through it all love empowers us allowing us to smile through the pain.

This message is made more powerful by the minimalist set, which places the focus on Maxwell and DA and the girl. The video culminates in a cacophony of deconstructionism punctuated with a look of unadultered joy on the girl's face. "I know she loves me; she loves everybody."
