Knowing the context can have a dramatic impact on how we read the parables. In this one, we see some surprising elements and applications in the story of the disrespecting son, the self-righteous son and the loving father.

The first two of three parables share 3 common themes- someting lost, something found, rejoicing in heaven.

God allows each one of us who is spiritual to join in God's holy work to help Christians escape from the trap of sin by bearing their burden while they are being restored

There is no sin greater than God's redemptive, healing power.
