Publisher's Summary:
The long-awaited prequel to the best-selling Highliners saga.
William McCloskey is back and better than ever in Warriors, the potent new prequel to Highliners, Breakers, and Raiders. Long before Hank Crawford arrived in the waters of Ketchikan, his partners and compatriots were already in love with its shores.
Following the final, crushing moments of World War II, Japanese officer Kiyoshi Tsurifune, Sergeant Jones Henry, and Resistance fighter Swede Scorden struggle to regain normalcy and any contact with the shimmering, fish-filled sea. Lost honor, fallen friends, their cultural identities gone in the wake of a nuclear blast - these fishermen-turned-soldiers have a long way to go till they regain the waters in which they feel most at home.
But as each finds his way to the bays of Alaska - Jones as fisherman, Swede eager for work in the cannery, Kiyoshi an ambassador for the Japanese trade - things arent as smooth as they had dreamed. A new union calls for a strike during the height of the salmon season, and expensive new engine boats are replacing the sails and oars fishermen like Jones Henry have relied on for years. Plus, unhealed wounds make the looming deal between Alaskan fishermen and Japanese buyers painful for many. Behind every conversation, the question looms: Will these war-torn men ever find their peace again?
Sweeping and powerful, like the pull of the ocean, Warriors is a novel that cant be paused and that can never be forgotten.
Editorial Reviews:
In William B. McCloskeys previous trilogy he described the life of Alaskan fishermen in the '60s and '70s. This prequel depicts three men, WWII "warriors" who, making sense of their lives after the war, enter the industry as a fisherman, seafood buyer, and cannery executive. With his deep expressive tone Aaron Abano gives this audiobook a strong performance, seeming equally at ease as a gruff American G.I. angry and impatient to start to normalize as he is a stoic Japanese Captain trying to overcome the perceived dishonor of defeat and start a new life. This is a fascinating look at readjusting to life after war and the burgeoning fishing industries of Alaska in the '50s.

The story is about that and all the prejudices left from war along with the horrible memories leading to nightmares
This is historical fiction. The author actually participated in some of the story. The time is post WWII. A Japanese warrior named Kiyoshi Tsurifune goes home in disgrace because he didn't die for the emperor. He returns to a small village where he and his father had owned a fishing company. Jones Henry a Marine vet returns to Ketchikan Alaska where his father owns a fishing boat. He meets a relative of a Swedish neighbor who also owns a fishing boat. His name is Swede Scorden. Swede is a veteran from the European war where he fought in the underground against Germans. Swede gets a chance to work in the management at the local fish cannery. All three men's lives intertwine and ultimately end in The Aleutian Islands off of Alaska. Japanese are wanting to fish once again in these waters where they have been banned since the war. The story is about that and all the prejudices left from war along with the horrible memories leading to nightmares. It is about changing technology and taking for granted the supplies of Salmon, Halibut, King Crab.
