Was the veteran always mentally ill?

Listen Later

Following on from the story of the young person who tried to save a life, I would like to share the same argument about veterans.

When a young person, on leaving high school decide they will enlist, to serve their country and the world.

On enlisting they are psyche evaluated. After suffering a conflict and they returned home and find they no longer fit in to their old lives, they feel they cannot manage life and so they go to a mental health professional looking for a solution and they are diagnosed as being mentally ill, that they have a mental disorder.

The same questions are to be asked of the veteran

Were you born mentally ill?

When you grew up in your family home, were you mentally ill?

When you made the decision to serve your country, was that when you were mentally ill?

When you went off to base camp, were psyche evaluated by professionals, did they make a mistake, were you mentally ill but hid it well?

When you got through your training and you became a combatant, was it in that moment you are mentally ill?

When you go to the front, you follow orders, you do right by your brothers in arms, you are part of that solution, is it at that moment you are mentally ill?

Was it when you suffered the horrors of war and experienced your Loss of Innocence and returned home, was it at that point you were mentally ill?

Were you mentally ill because you survived and returned home?

Were you mentally ill because you suffered nightmares and flashbacks; perfectly normal human responses to a threat on your life; was it as this point you were mentally ill?

When your family and loved ones, would unknowingly press your buttons or trigger you, and you didnt react, you practiced a great level of self restraint, was it now that you were mentally ill?

Was it when you felt it would be safest  for all concerned if you moved away, pushed people away or went to some home for veterans, were these actions clear signs that you were mentally ill?

Or

Was it you seeking help to deal with your demons, wanting to be a part of the solution. Was it at this point you believed you were mentally ill?

Was it when you arranged an appointment with a mental health professional and shared your story, was this when you ere mentally ill?

Was it this mental health professional dealing with another veteran, boxed you in with everyone else, the world of ptsd and then you were mentally ill?

Coming away from your diagnosis, did you believe you were mentally ill?

or

Might you have been grasping at straws, that you would have agreed to anything, if it might offer some form of solace from your pain and suffering?

And then you are told you were misdiagnosed and you don't have ptsd.

Here you have been plying your body with a multitude of medications, causing a chemical imbalance in your very being.

Has the cure been worse than the bite?

Have you been your own worst enemy?

And now you find yourself in No Man's Land,  caught between a rock and a hard place.
