Girl, You Haven't Heard??

Was Viola Desmond REALLY The Canadian Rosa Parks??

Listen Later

Viola was an extremely successful business woman who did everything in her power to propel Black women forward during a time period when they were intentionally being left behind. Viola Desmond was one of the many Black women who bravely and actively fought Canadian segregation, in a time where many were denying the fact that it even existed. When she eventually made her way to the Roseland Theatre, one of the many places in Nova Scotia that had unofficial segregation, she sat in the whites only section on the main floor as she was nearsighted. When she was told she needed to go to the balcony and sit with her people, she refused. The police were then called. They violently, and aggressively removed Viola from the theatre, injuring her. She was then jailed, and charged with defrauding the provincial government of Nova Scotia. Viola used this as an opportunity to shed light on the realities of being a Black woman in Nova Scotia, and the regular horrors they were subject to.
