David Lowery's Mother Mary stars Anne Hathaway as a pop star on the cusp of her comeback, pulled back into the orbit of her estranged best friend and former costume designer, played by Michaela Coel. What sounds like a celebrity drama slowly reveals itself as something far more raw, strange, and beautiful. If you loved Black Swan, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, or anything in A24's weirder corner of their catalog, this one is for you.

Then we pivot to Lee Cronin's The Mummy, the divisive body horror family drama that's also an exorcism film that's also a Sam Raimi Evil Dead riff that's also a revenge movie. We love Cronin, and there's real craft here, but we dig into why the film's identity crisis keeps it from landing as hard as it could.
