Heartbreaking and Heartwarming
I heard Mrs. Demuth speak at a writer's conference a couple of years ago. Her talk was so inspirational and really spoke to me. I decided then to read one of her books. I saw this one and thought it might be geared more toward women and I guess some would say that. However, I fell in love with her writing style. The characters were so real. I read the book in the matter of a few hours, which is VERY uncommon for me. I just couldn't put it down.
Hard by good book.
This is a hard book dealing with sexual abuse of a child. I found the first part of the book painful to read. But it does have a happy ending and it kept me very intrigued and interested, as I wanted to figure out the mystery and questions. The author deals sensitively with a difficult subject. Not probably good for those under 13 or 14 as this is a PG 13 subject.
Touched my heart
I didn't expect to like this book since it has the subject of childhood sexual abuse in it and I tend to shy away from reading about something that awful since it triggers memories of my past, but I found it was actually healing. The author does an excellent job explaining the confusion, guilt, anger, and hurt that goes on in the mind of the child who is experiencing this heinous act of torture. One of the key themes is redemption and God showing that there is a hope and a future. Nothing is lost.
An Awesome Book!
Read this book in one sitting. Such a beautiful, well written book. I cried through it a lot. I haven't read a book this good in many years. I found myself pausing through out the read & reflecting on God's goodness. I love this style of writing, the theme, the country type setting. Everything. I can't wait to check out more by this Author.
Loved it
This is a very moving book. Written from the child's perspective brought life to it, the tragedy and the bewildered courage of Mara. There is a great deal of painful cruelty in the story, sadly this reads very realistically, knowing as we do nowadays, how much real life abuse of children there is in this world. The eventual balance of love and compassion shown by Zady and her family also rings true, and I was thankful for the justice that finally prevails. A book that will appeal to the right audience, perhaps mothers, those who have been a bused themselves, and any with a love and compassion for children.
