Welcome to the seventh WATCHING TROY FALL review of TROY: FALL OF A CITY.  This is my review of Episode Seven “TWELVE DAYS”.

In creating my reviews, I attempt to replicate what is likely your own “viewing experience”.  So, I watch the episode only once, and do not allow myself to “pause” or “replay” while watching.  Then, relying only on my first impressions and real-time viewing notes, I set up my podcast mic and record my review.  I do not allow myself to “watch ahead”.  And finally, I have deliberately avoided reading/listening to other reviews or commentaries on Troy:  Fall of a City.  So, for better or worse, the impressions and opinions in this review are strictly my own.

I’d love to hear your opinions, of the series, and of my reviews.  You can contact me from this website.  Jeff

I dedicate this anticipatory episode of WATCHING TROY FALL to Helen of Troy:  in my view one of the most fascinating and “politicized” female characters in story.  I begin by noting that the “Helen stories” that a culture chooses to tell inevitably offer a revealing Rorschach (inkblot) Test on that culture’s issues, values, fears and aspirations concerning women.  Then I offer a quick resume:  tracing Helen from her divine origins in rape and violence, through the “Sparta years”, the “war years in Troy”, and ultimately back to the “post war Sparta years” again.  Finally, I explore five different “takes” on Helen that TROY: FALL OF A CITY will have to choose between:  Helen as Homewrecker; Helen as Damsel in Distress; Helen as Temptress; Helen as Emancipated Woman; and Helen as Pawn of Gods and Men.

This is the final anticipatory episodes of WATCHING TROY FALL.  Future viewing episodes will all be dedicated to “as close to real-time as possible” critical commentary and reviews of each of the eight episodes of TROY: FALL OF A CITY.

You can join in the conversation – sharing your views on my anticipatory episodes, and on the mini-series – on three different platforms.  Privately, via the Contact Page of this website.  Publicly, via my Facebook page:  jeffwrightstoryteller or via Twitter: @trojanwarpod.

Looking forward to watching the series and hearing from you.  Jeff

In this anticipatory episode of WATCHING TROY FALL I speculate on which character from the Trojan War epic will serve the role of “sympathetic male lead” in the Netflix/BBC production TROY: FALL OF A CITY.  I first review the resumes of the major Greek contenders – Agamemnon, Menealus, Achilles and Odysseus – before concluding that only one man in that list delivers the possible goods as “strong male mini-series lead”.  Then I turn to the Trojan contenders – Priam, Paris and Hector.  After quickly discounting poor old King Priam, I spend the balance of the episode providing a detailed comparison of “older brother Hector” vs. “younger brother Paris”.  And then I offer my best guess on the sympathetic male lead that TROY: FALL OF A CITY will choose.  What I conclude might surprise you.
