In Episode 434 of the Survival Punk Podcast, we’re talking about something a lot of preppers overlook until it’s too late: running water. Not just bottled water for drinking — but actual systems to keep water flowing for cooking, washing, flushing, and staying clean when the grid goes down.
Without a plan for water and sanitation, everything else you prep falls apart. So let’s fix that.
People think water and assume drinking. And yes, clean drinking water is essential. But when SHTF, the real danger is losing sanitation. That means no flushing, no washing dishes, no cleaning wounds, no doing laundry, and no staying clean enough to avoid infection, stink, and misery.
Without water for hygiene, morale crashes. Sickness spreads. Everything gets harder.
There’s a difference between having water and having water that runs. Buckets will get old real fast. You want solutions that keep you clean without constant labor.
Set up gutters, barrels, and filters to catch every drop nature gives you. Rainwater is free, steady, and passive — and it doesn’t take much to build a system that’ll give you water for bathing, cleaning, and flushing year-round.
If you’ve got a well, you’ve got gold — but only if you can access it. A solar-powered pump lets you pull water even if the grid is toast. Combine that with a cistern or holding tank and you’ve got a sustainable off-grid water system that just works.
If you don’t have a well, use gravity. Elevate a holding tank, collect rainwater, or use a manual pump to fill it — then let gravity do the rest. A basic plumbing setup can give you sinks, showers, and flushing toilets even when society’s lights go out.
At the end of the episode, we touch on something just as critical: personal hygiene supplies. Stock up on:
Soap (liquid and bar)
Toothpaste and brushes
Razors, nail clippers, tweezers
Menstrual products
Washcloths and towels
Baking soda and vinegar (multi-use cleaners)
Baby wipes (your best friend without a shower)
They don’t take up much space, and they make a huge difference in comfort, confidence, and health.
Storing jugs is fine — for short-term emergencies. But if you’re serious about long-term survival, you need a water system. One that flows. One that keeps you clean. One that lets you live like a human being when everything else is falling apart.
