Water Organizations in the US - Turning the Charity Model on Its Head
with Jon Kaufman (Interview)

The season of giving is here and while you might want
to donate to charity, something is holding you back.
Maybe you don’t know where your money is really going,
or exactly how it’s going to help those in need. Jon
Kaufman is the creator of H2OpenDoors, a charity that
works in a different way. “It’s time to start using
our charitable gifts in a way that empowers the poorest
among us to profit, which promotes self-reliance and
actually creates a system where the recipients can MAKE
money instead of TAKE money,” says Kaufman. Kaufman will discuss how he’s disrupting the
charity model and turning the idea of giving on its
head. 100% of contributions to H2OpenDoors are used for
the acquisition, shipment and installation of water-
centric businesses in the poorest regions of the world.
Villages then use revenue from the bottling plants etc.
to fund social services in the community including
college scholarships, nutritional programs,
construction of proper latrines and classroom
expansion. Kaufman is the author of “Long Walk on a Dry
Road, the Education of a Water Warrior.
"Our three core missions are Water, Education, and Peace.
We contribute a solar-powered water purification plant that can produce up to 40,000 liters of safe drinking water every single day from virtually any raw source. This is enough water production to guide a village or a school into establishing a water sales business, earning as much as $100,000 per year for their social services.
College scholarships, latrines, classroom expansion, computers, nutritional programs… these can all be earned by the village’s efforts to sell water. We also provide an internet hotspot server, containing a complete school curriculum for 100 devices. These servers bring internet into a school, and content into their learning environments.
By focusing on Water and Education, we can not only help to create peace. We also help to encourage self-reliance and dignity."
