What is the best sequel of all time? GodFather II? Empire Strikes Back? My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2? (<— Don’t be a hater).

According to Rotten Tomatoes, I was shocked to find that the top two are virtuous, joy-filled, kindred adventures. Yet as we reflect, doesn’t this truly describe the greatest ongoing journeys we all desire?

This Sunday, we discussed the sequel to last week’s message on Spiritual Formation. Please join us for part 2 of the adventure of “Getting out of the Boat.”

The name “Water’s Edge” arose when our friend and mentor Larry challenged me to reread the compelling (if also controversial) Old Testament book of Joshua.

Leaving the wilderness, God commands his people to cross the Jordan River at her flood stage. There is a distinct moment when the priests come to the shoreline and connect with the water. Simultaneously, the upstream flow ceases. The people of God cross. A wondrous journey continues.

What the reader witnesses is a beautiful blend of God’s part and our part.

This Sunday (7/6), we witness a New Testament moment at the water’s edge. As God’s royal priesthood (1 Pet. 2:9), may we receive the many callings God has for us and more importantly... with us.

If we do everything for God, we tend to think everything is going to turn out well.

It doesn’t.

Moreover, when we share your heart and thoughts for Jesus, we think everybody’s going to be excited.

Not everyone is.

Expect Resistance.

What are the most difficult spaces to share your faith (or even represent your faith)? There is an undercurrent of hostility that has always existed, but given our numerous social mediums, the more hostile voices may seem to be front and center, which can make confessing Jesus as Lord… difficult. However, we are called to be salt and light. Meaning, it’s not what “do I share” but “what can I share”?

What can I share as I stand in hostile territory?

Every man here plays a vital role in modeling the Father’ Love, Grace and Truth to the next generation(s). We are to be spiritual uncles, really spiritual fathers. Certainly, God is not just a male. We are made in God’s image, and in that relational image, male and female he created (Gen. 1:27). That said, the language Jesus, the Bible and history uses to identify the first person of the Trinity is… God the Father.

What then is the path any spiritual father?

In the upper room, people pray.

Their intercessions leads them to the public square…  

The Holy Spirit comes down at Pentecost.

The Presence and Power fills the air… 



The beginning Church is convicted while comforted. Becoming One… everything they share.

In so many ways, we are the bridge builders between God and our hopeless, hurting world. There is much art, ideas and entertainment that demonstrate an aspect of the Gospel of Jesus Christ (Ie. Community, Longing, Redemption, Etc). These can be used to build a bridge to the greater truth of King Jesus. Look around. God has given so much to build bridges to His goodness, beauty, truth and ultimately to Himself.

One of the most difficult aspects of being in the church is being confronted by those excessively engrossed in our socio-political milieu: The fear. The taking of sides. The hatred. The inability to see one another as image bearers.

Because of this, many leaders and others have left the church.
