We can't understand forgiveness in prayer until we understand that we are the Temple of the Living God. In the Old Testament the Temple was a place where the Jews interacted with the Living God. In prayer we are engaging with the Spirit of God. Just as Jesus was imploring the Jews to properly enter the presence of God in His Temple, so he is encouraging his followers to properly enter the presence of God in prayer.
