Returning podcast guest Carmela Livera shares her journey of needing a new kidney. Hope turned to hardship, as her healing journey was put on pause due to needing this life-saving organ in order to function at full capacity. The sadness and pain that comes from this setback did not dampen Carmela's spirits however, as her ability to give and spread love through spirituality and prayer has only gotten stronger.
Carmela's journey through life and overcoming her hardships is what brings her to do better, to spread her love to others, so that people going though tough situations know they have someone caring for them, too. This episode of Ride The Wave shows the power of taking care of those in your community, and how spirituality helps people cope. In today's episode, our guest Tatum Williams goes into detail about how he lives his life with purpose in every action. Younger years of live provide volatile and explosive forms of expression. Not all of these reactions are positive, however. Acting unintentionally or being reactionary instead of thinking through your choices can affect parts of your life later down the line.
With the help of art, music, and poetry, Tatum expresses how people who don't think through their actions will try to take others down, but living with intent and purpose can keep him straying far from his purpose. Growing up poor fundamentally shapes one as a person. Our guest on today's episode of Ride The Wave knows this all too well. From living in a cramped basement apartment at a young age, Ron had to learn the ways of the hustle from his father in order to make ends meet. Side hustles are usually a temporary way to gain income, but for others, they're the only way they can keep the lights on and do well for themself. Ron tells his story about how he went from poverty to success, and how his hustle way of life keeps him that way. In today's episode, our guest, Alvin Corbett, tells his story about living in the New Jersey housing Projects. Once a fairly normal community, the 80s and beyond brought the "Dog Pound" projects into turmoil as the crack epidemic came in full swing. Alvin lost many people dear to him, and saw his community turn dark from drugs, violence, and murder.
Despite his troubled upbringing, Alvin managed to persevere and survive amongst the trauma. His story and experiences highlight the real and raw dangers of the crack epidemic to the African American community during the 80s. His first-hand accounts of his life paint a upbringing of trauma and pain, that eventually leads into prosperity and success.
