It may be less accurate to say that Jesus 'accepted' sinners, and more appropriate to say that Jesus 'restored' sinners.

Followers of Jesus must realize the shape of our reality; we must admit the personalness of evil; we must become suspicious of our valuations; and we must seek, participate, and offer the freedom of Jesus.

As Christians we are not called primarily to persuade the world of the truthfulness of the Gospel. Rather, we are called to testify to the truthfulness of the Gospel.

Jesus' contemporaries weren't necessarily trying to decide whether Jesus was, to use C. S. Lewis's phrase, a "liar, lunatic, or Lord."  For Jesus' contemporaries, he was either a prophet or a test.
