This insight was inspired by a quote from comedian and social commentator – Bill Hicks
"Listen, the next revolution is gonna be a revolution of ideas."
The late, great Bill Hicks made his living by making people laugh, but what he said about revolution and ideas is no laughing matter. You see, revolutions — or rapid change of any kind — can only take place when ideas reach a critical mass. If the ideas in question are bad, then you get the Dark Ages and Soviet Russia. If the ideas are good, you get the Renaissance and America. So, take it from a comedic genius who's no longer with us –ideas matter, and ideas bring about revolution.

It's also about engaging the world with an objective, scientific mindset that is always skeptical of truth claims that don't pass rigorous intellectual muster.
Welcome to the Way the Renaissance Man podcast.
This is a show about ideas, personal empowerment, and celebrating the rational life. Our goal is to help each other discover the tools needed to better focus our minds, integrate our thoughts with actions, and live the lives we really want with your host Jim Woods.
This season, I will continue speaking with many more interesting Renaissance Men, and Women, who can help us identify, understand and assimilate the key ingredients essential to constructing a life well lived.
Who's On: Today's guest is Michael Shermer, our final FreedomFest interview. What's Discussed: Helping the world see things from that perspective is Michael Shermer, Founding Publisher of Skeptic magazine, the host of the Science Salon Podcast, and a Presidential Fellow at Chapman University where he teaches Skepticism 101. In addition to being the world's point man in the battle to cultivate healthy scientific skepticism, Michael also spent more than a decade as a professional bicycle racer, which basically vaults him directly into Renaissance Man status. In this episode, Michael tells us about how he created his "non-traditional career" as a writer, publisher, and critical thinking advocate. Jim and Michael also discuss the history of science, the rise of postmodernist thinking, the current assault on truth, the changing nature of politics, and the downside of using labels to categorize people. Jim has been a long-time admirer of Michael Shermer's work, and in this episode, you'll discover why. And now, here's Jim's conversation with Michael Shermer. Up next on Way of the Renaissance Man… a special audio essay presentation titled… "Make the Coronavirus Kindness Choice."
The following audio essay was written and narrated by Jim Woods. A slightly edited version of this essay was first published on March 18 th in Jim's weekly column, "The Deep Woods" which can be found at JimWoodsInvesting.com.
The world is a very different place today than it was just a month ago.
In my area of professional expertise, financial markets, we went from raging bull market to a growling bear market in approximately three weeks. Yet financial markets are not the biggest difference in our world.
The biggest difference is that the coronavirus has provoked and unsettling mix of fear, uncertainty, angst, anxiety and a very real sense of impending doom in the minds of billions around the globe.
All over the planet, people are being quarantined, or are self-isolating, or practicing social distancing or whatever the proper term might be for any particular situation. In the United States, many store shelves are bare of essentials such as toilet paper, paper towels and cleaning products.
More importantly, many stores have experienced shortages of meat, milk, eggs and other vital food stuffs.
Today's coronavirus milieu reminds me of the words of the great Thomas Paine, who famously wrote, "These are the times that try men's souls."

Who's On: Today's guests are John Paul Mendocha and Gabe Bautista. What's Discussed: It's often said that more than half of new businesses fail during the first year, but that's actually a bit too optimistic. The fact is most businesses fail in the first five minutes. That's the premise and the title of the new book by John Paul Mendocha and Gabe Bautista, two of the nation's leading business consultants. In this episode… John Paul and Gabe join Jim at his ranch for an intimate dining room conversation about why most businesses are doomed to fail from the start, why it usually takes several years to realize it, and why correct positioning in the real key for anyone who wants to create a successful enterprise. More importantly, you'll find out how and why John Paul and Gabe are both Renaissance Men, and why Jim is so excited to share their eclectic backgrounds, experience, and their year of hard-earned knowledge and wisdom about how to properly position your business, and your life. If you've ever wanted to learn why some businesses succeed while others fail miserably, then this episode is positioned to win just for you. "The Great Depression was a failure not of capitalism but of the hyperactive state."
– Paul Johnson, and his introduction to Murray N. Rothbard's, America's Great DepressionIntroducing our NEW audio/video version of #WednesdayWisdom. Check it out!
Capitalism has certainly taken its lumps over the past year — lumps that, in my opinion, it doesn't deserve. If you want to know how capitalism started to really get a bad name, we have to go back to the Great Depression. Contrary to what many people accept as economic gospel, the Great Depression was not capitalism gone wild. Rather, it was created, and prolonged, by too much government. If you really want to educate yourself about the true causes of the Great Depression, then read Murray Rothbard's fantastic book, America's Great Depression. I guarantee that after reading this work, you'll have a much better understanding about the pernicious effects of government intrusion in the economy — both then, and now. Who's On: Today's guest from our FreedomFest interviews is Dr. Joel Wade. What's Discussed: Dr. Wade's first podcast appearance last year elicited some of the best comments we've had on any show, so it was about time for another conversation with this exceptional individual. This time, Jim and Dr. Wade discuss the history of the positive psychology movement, how Dr. Wade got started in the field, and why this field resonated with him as a young man. The conversation then gets into details on how you can implement practical techniques on how to increase happiness, including how to focus your mind on what actually makes you happy, how to look at a problem from "the outside", and why focusing on the negative is not a good problem-solving technique. Jim describes this episode as "another home run podcast for listeners", and we're pretty sure you'll agree. And now… here's Jim's conversation with Dr. Joel Wade. "Indecision may or may not be my problem."
– Jimmy BuffettIntroducing our NEW audio/video version of #WednesdayWisdom. Check it out!
Always the entertaining singer, songwriter and entrepreneur, Jimmy Buffett also has a knack for delivering pearls of wisdom. Here he jokingly reminds us of the perils of indecision, a vice that may or may not hurt us when trying to make investment decisions, or any other important decisions. Who's On: Today's guest from our FreedomFest interviews is Grover Norquist. What's Discussed: In this episode, you'll learn about Grover's successes on this front since the last time he spoke with Jim a year ago. You'll also here a deep dive into the issue of tariffs, why they are so destructive, and why they're a form of economic self-destruction. The conversation continues with a discussion of the current climate in Washington… the nature of bureaucracy and the true essence of the so-called deep state. Plus, Grover games the 2020 presidential contest, including his theory on why the race really comes down to just three battleground states. He also updates us on his adventures in stand-up comedy, his relationship with comedian Bill Maher, and the state of the liberty movement. And now, here's Jim's conversation with Grover Norquist. Who's On: Today's guest from our FreedomFest interviews is Edward Hudgins.. What's Discussed: Like Jim, Ed is a passionate intellectual activist who promotes reason, freedom, individualism and capitalism through his work at The Heartland Institute, one of the world's leading free market think tanks. Just some of the topics discussed in this episode include transhumanism, the development of a neural net, the latest anti-aging science, and the brilliance of science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke. You'll also hear Ed's sharp critique of the American education system. Yet the primary focus of this episode is the advocacy for creating what Ed calls, "Human Achievement Day." That's a day designed to remind people of how brilliant the mind in action can be, and what better day to do that than on July 20, the anniversary of the day humans first landed on the moon? Listen and WATCH HERE NOW! In this brilliant and ultra-pithy statement, the great Adam Smith gives us the essence of capitalism and free trade. For the country's sake, I hope that at least a few of the people currently employed at the top levels of government have actually read Smith's quintessential work.
