  • Episode 695: Interview with Ethan and Naomi Sacks – June 1, 2025

This week in Episode #695, I talk with Ethan Sacks, accomplished creator of comics including Star Wars, Old Man Hawkeye, and Midnight Suns, and his daughter and co-writer, Naomi Sacks, who are telling an allegory of a deeply personal time in their lives called A Haunted Girl. They have a Zoop.gg crowdfunding event going on until about Thursday, June 12.

This book was originally published by Image Comics and Syzygy Publishing, and this hardcover edition contains all-new behind the scenes features and is the ultimate collector’s item for fans of this acclaimed supernatural horror story. The book is described this way: “The fate of all life on Earth depends on a girl who doesn’t know if she wants to live. Cleo, a 16-year-old adopted Japanese-American whose anxiety and depression drives her to suicidal thoughts, is fresh out of the hospital and trying unsuccessfully to reintegrate back into her old life.” This campaign went live on the Zoop crowdfunding platform, Tuesday, May 6th.  This date was chosen specifically to coincide with World Mental Health Awareness month, due to the book’s subject matter. We explore how the series came to be, who the various characters are, and also talk about how these creatives worked together and what else they might have coming our way soon.

  • Episode #694: Interview with Damien Duffy – May 25, 2025

In Episode 694 this week, Damien Duffy from Parable of the Talents talks about his recently released sequel to Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower!

Damien was chosen to continue his successful work of translating Butler’s prose into the comics format, once again working with artist John Jennings. It’s described this way: “Following Lauren Olamina, a preacher’s daughter who develops a new religion, Earthseed, while traveling the dangerous and dystopian country, Duffy and Jennings bring the sci-if classic to life with a beautifully drawn graphic novel adaptation. Parable of the Talents continues Butler’s masterful story set against a background of a war-torn continent under the control of Christian fundamentalist fascist state.” We discuss how this book came to be, who the various characters are, and what else we can expect from this high-power writer/artist team in the months ahead! • Episode #693: Interview with Stephan Franck – May 18, 2025

This week in Episode #693, I talk with Stephan Franck, an acclaimed cartoonist and award-nominated animator, writer, and director! He has a Kickstarter underway for both Romance in the Age of the Space God and Palomino!

Stephan is quite the accomplished creator, and his Kickstarter is for his stand-alone graphic novella called Romance in the Age of the Space God and his Ringo-Award nominated crime mystery Palomino. Here’s how both are described: “Part Sci-fi thriller,  part slice-of-life, and part political satire, Romance in the Age of the Space God drops us into a world not unlike ours, where things once thought impossible have happened. Also, a captivating neo-noir crime mystery, Palomino begins in 1981 Los Angeles, where we meet Eddie Lang, an old-school, hardboiled former Burbank PD detective juggling his six-nights-a-week gig in the Palomino house band, his P.I. business, and his teenage daughter–who might even be more hardboiled than he is!” We explore both creations, who the various characters are, how these stories came to be, and also talk about an important project I’m particularly fond of that Stephan helped bring to the big screen. Be sure to back this excellent comics project before it concludes on Monday, June 6, at 2:59 a.m. EDT.
