If you are on the UFC FIGHT PASS you need to check out the mini-documentary about Matt Hughes in the “25 Years In Short” series. The story describes the UFC Hall of Famer comeback from a nearly fatal accident in 2017. Certainly is worth a watch.

I have wanted to have Matt on the podcast and on the fishing show for a long time. His first fight in the UFC was in 1999, and he is my favorite fighter of all time. Matt defended his title 9 times.

I met Matt for the first time in 2010 and we have kept up some after that. Later I found a post on Instagram about him in a hospital and found that he was struck by a train. I commented after seeing him walk into the UFC with him all healed, that we should go on a fishing trip. After that we got him down to Hawks Cay and then had him sit down on the podcast. He was a huge inspiration to me before his accident, after the accident he is even more inspiring to me. He has recovered in a way that is really incredible.

I don’t know anybody who could survive a train accident other than someone like Matt Hughes. He has a wonderful sense of humor and a great attitude. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I do.

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Nome Buckman. We met in person in downtown Nashville to discuss her recent adventure to Labrador and subsequent article about her experience which you will find in DUN Magazine's latest fall issue.  

Why do so many anglers put Labrador on their bucket lists as must experience fishing destination? Perhaps it's the crystal clear waters that lie amid the rugged landscape, the overabundance of trophy fish, or perhaps it's the remote serenity of it all.

Peter Miller has done lots of stuff, you may know him from his TV show Bass2Billfish and now started Uncharted Waters with Peter Miller. In addition to that, Peter is also the 3 time World Sailfish Champion with his team The GetLit. Before that he was a male model.

He is the only person I know who came to the ranks of a professional fisherman through being a male model. That is an interesting path so we definitely talked about that, as well we discussed his work ethic and how he got to where he is today.

I got the chance to sit down with Graham Tayloe for a full podcast and it was incredible to talk to him and hear his stories. We had such a good time together that I split up our conversation to include a How 2 Tuesday session.

In this podcast Graham talks about the difference between how to kill a turkey if you have to versus killing a turkey with your buddy. Here are some quick bullet points about the differences:

Killing a turkey with your buddy:

• You gotta have a good buddy that won’t screw it up

• You’re buddy needs to be able to sit there

• You need to be able to communicate with your buddy

• One call in your pocket

On this week’s episode of The Woman Angler and Adventurer, Barb Carey records an episode from a WI Women Fish event called Fish Camp, and there were 70 Women in the audience. This is the first show of this nature and it was exciting to be recording with a room full of cheering anglers. The women were gathered to attend the 12th annual Fish Camp, which is a long weekend of fishing, learning, meeting new people, and basking in an environment of support and camaraderie. This years motto was “ If she can do it, I can do it!”

 Fish Camp started with 20 Women and zero boats and has progressed to filling three resorts with 70 Women. The shoreline and docks are filled with boats, and two pontoons are rented to be sure all 70 get out to fish the 12,942 acres of the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. The boats range from kayaks to $70,000 tournament boats and the fishing experience ranges from new angler to seasoned professional.

The experience is about more than fishing. As one member stated “A place we can all share our stories, our triumphs, our weaknesses, and disappointments, and the stories are met with understanding, kindness and love...and humor when needed! This is a badass group of women who, together, can do anything.”

Listen as Barb chats with gals that include three Mom and daughter teams, Chris and Darlynn, Sparky and Ruth, and Brittney and Dianna. We also hear from, Teresa Meade, an accomplished walleye tournament angler. We also have the former President of the Woman Anglers of MN, Julie Lane who is a new member of WI Women Fish, shares some stories and tells us why she is the newest biggest fan of WI Women Fish. Bonnie Timm, who is a member of the Women Ice Angler Project shares a little bit about that project.  We meet Kim Henderson, who is a new member of WI Women Fish, and we get her first impression of fishing with a group of Women. We close out with Holly Hanson, the only Woman to attend all 12 Fish camps, and who was a vital part of the beginning of WI Women Fish.

This was a fun show to record and we hope to more recording at Women’s events.
