Do doctors actually need whole life insurance, or are they being sold an expensive financial product they don't need?
Whole life insurance is a form of permanent life insurance that provides a death benefit for life, unlike term life insurance, which only pays if you die during the policy term. The tradeoff is cost. Permanent life insurance can cost many times more than comparable term coverage.
In this Financial Bootcamp episode, we break down how whole life insurance works, why most doctors primarily need term life insurance during their working years, and what happens to the cash value inside a whole life policy.
We also look at the tax treatment of policy withdrawals, borrowing against cash value, non-direct recognition policies, and why the investment returns on many whole life policies can be disappointing during the early years. Some policies may take 15 or 20 years to break even, creating a significant opportunity cost compared with other investments.
That doesn't mean whole life insurance is never appropriate. There are legitimate uses involving estate planning, business succession, and certain specialized financial strategies. The question is whether you actually have one of those needs.
Before buying whole life insurance, understand what you're purchasing, how the policy works, and what else you could do with the money. For most doctors, there are likely better places to put those dollars first.
