  • Buzzing for human health

Honey bees are the heart of our ecosystem. They help pollinate many of the agricultural crops produced on Canadian farms, they support healthy habitats for wildlife, and they produce the honey we enjoy at our breakfast table.

But they can also help us better understand human health.

In this episode, Maria Janser, a USask graduate student in the WCVM's Department of Veterinary Pathology and now a first-year medical student in the USask College of Medicine, joins hosts Cat and Lucas to discuss how honey bees can serve as social animal models for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) in people.

  • Preventing preterm labour

Cat and Lucas sit down with #WCVM-based USask master's student Brook McKenna to discuss how her research could help scientists better understand, detect and even prevent preterm labour, a reproductive health issue that affects approximately eight per cent of births in Canada.

  • Tackling swine dysentery

Suzana Grazielli Cortiano Stubert, a USask PhD student based in the WCVM Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, joins us in the pilot episode of WCVM Next Gen Scientists.

Working in Dr. Matheus Costa's lab, Suzana's research focuses on swine health and infectious diseases, with a particular interest in swine dysentery caused by Brachyspira species. She is interested in understanding host-pathogen interactions and developing better tools for disease diagnosis and control.
