“We are unknown to ourselves, we men of knowledge — and with good reason. We have never sought ourselves — how could it happen that we should ever find ourselves? It has rightly been said: ’Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also’; our treasure is where the beehives of our knowledge are.”

Merely knowing a lot does not help you to know yourself. We can see that through many people of higher learning who are still petty and foolish, arrogant and vain. I like the sentiment here because he puts it forth very clearly as to why: You don’t value it and therefore you don’t pursue it, and moreover, you never will until you do. He also would seem to include himself among their number.
