JJ shares insights from his daily mission to help others grow and find purpose. He emphasizes cutting through the noise to support organizations that truly deliver on their promises and highlights the importance of building resilience, the focus of his upcoming book. JJ also discusses expanding his own podcast to reach and inspire more people, reminding listeners that anyone from any background can do anything.

This week’s episode brings together two incredible guests—Col. (Ret.) B. Wayne Quist and Dr. Steve Lansing—authors and lifelong advocates for veterans’ mental health. Col. Quist takes us back as far as WWII, sharing his personal experiences with trauma and the cultural expectation to simply “man up” or risk being cast aside. His journey led him to earn a Master’s in Psychology, fueling his passion to study PTSD and help others heal.

Through a chance meeting, Col. Quist connected with Dr. Lansing, who brings over 52 years of experience in the mental health field. Together, they’ve researched the long history of war trauma—stretching back 2,500 years to the writings of Plato, Socrates, and ancient Sparta—tracing how society has silenced or misunderstood these wounds of the soul. Their shared mission is clear: to provide hope, healing, and ultimately, suicide prevention.

The conversation also highlights powerful stories—from veterans facing Agent Orange fallout to those who found school scarier than combat—underscoring the lasting impact of trauma. Looking ahead, Wayne and Steve are preparing for Veterans Day events in Lake City, where Dr. Lansing will also lead a continuing education course for therapists.

We also welcome musician Kim Donnette, a Navy veteran’s spouse with a heart for encouragement and healing through music. Kim shares the deeply moving story behind her first song, “Come Home,” inspired by a bandmate’s painful memory revealed for the first time. She also discusses her new song “You Lied,” born from her mother’s wisdom about the promises parents make and the reality of life’s endings. Her songwriting is raw, heartfelt, and a reminder of how music can knit our worlds together in unexpected ways.

This week, we welcome Col. (Ret.) Oak McColluch, who shares his powerful mission, Leadership Legacy. Oak is passionate about teaching servant leadership, a practice he’s lived by since his high school basketball days. His work spreads through four key areas—talks, his book, social media, and his own podcast. He explains that legacy has two parts: what you leave behind in your career and life, and more importantly, the leaders you raise up along the way. “It really is about community,” Oak reminds us, giving heartfelt credit to his wife, who also served.

Our musical guest is Joshua Martin, a talented singer-songwriter whose passion for country and Americana music has taken him across the country. Outdoorsy and hardworking, Joshua is preparing to release his next record. He shares three meaningful songs with us:

“Fight This War” – written in honor of veterans and those impacted by 9/11.

“If I Fall” – a heartfelt piece born from personal struggles after returning from Iraq, reminding us that no one is truly alone.

“American Suicide” – a song about honesty, truth, and living authentically.

Through countless conversations, Rob has heard the stories of pain, healing, and resilience from these heroes. He’s also connected with Amber Waves of Grain, a program dedicated to supporting those who serve, with an upcoming beer festival fundraiser on November 1st at Dos Lagos in Corona.

Our musical guest is Copperhead Jones—a Navy veteran whose sound and story refuse to be put in a box. From Florida to Texas and around the world, his journey has shaped powerful songs that speak to service, scars, and the struggles of the heart. He shares three tracks with us: “Anchor” (his reflection on service and support), “It Don’t Work Like That” (a raw take on heartbreak), and “Leaving This Town” (a song to simply sit back and enjoy).

This week we welcome Mike “Sully” Sullivan, representing Team RWB, a veterans’ service organization that will celebrate its 15th anniversary in just a few weeks. At its heart, it’s a community of accountability and camaraderie, built to ensure veterans never face challenges alone.

Sully will officially step into his new role as Executive Director of Team RWB during the Twin Cities Marathon weekend on October 5th. He shares how his own journey—alongside Mike Irwin, one of Team RWB’s founders—shaped his passion for helping veterans rebuild their support structures and rediscover connection through wellness, friendship, and purpose.

In this episode, we sit down with Chaz Kraynak, founder of FSB Initiative Inc. (Forward Support Base). After serving our country, Chaz suffered injuries that, combined with some tough choices, left him homeless. Out of that hardship came his mission: to honor, help, and serve others facing similar struggles. Our musical guest is Kelly Daniels, a talented artist who chose music over military service the very day he was set to enlist. With deep family roots in military and first responder service, Kelly shares his gift as a way of giving back.

He performed three powerful songs for us:

“Faded Photographs” (featuring Brooks Herring) — inspired by his grandparents’ resilience and the sacrifices of families who send loved ones off to serve.

“Kiss Me Goodbye” — a deeply personal reflection on love, loss, and the pain of silent goodbyes.

In this episode, we sit down with Josh Rainy and Danny Stokes of Freedom Ops, a new nonprofit driven by a powerful mission to honor the fallen and support healing. Josh shares the story of their recent event, The Courage Climb, where they ascended Cadillac Mountain in Maine 13 times—each climb dedicated to one of the 13 heroes lost during the Afghanistan pullout.
