On our fifth exit interview podcast of The Amazing Race 30, Rob Cesternino talks with the fifth team eliminated from “The Amazing Race 30”, Team Well Strung, Trevor Wadleigh and Chris Marchant.

Rob Cesternino is joined by Jessica Liese and Mike Bloom to recap Episode 6 of The Amazing Race 30.

Although it was nice to see the return of the Double U-Turn, much to the chagrin of Jessica and many fans, we began with an exclamation of dismay over the fact that the U-Turn was before the Detour, making it not a literal U-Turn. She also pointed out that she thinks Team Big Brother will bounce back after their sub-par finish this week and had no moral problem with Jessica giving Brittany and Alex the wrong answer at the Kafka phone Roadblock. While Mike and Rob agreed with Jessica (Liese) on that, he thought it was a major blunder for Jessica (Graf) to upset two more teams, while it was really likely that Team Well Strung would be eliminated anyway.

Rob and Jessica agreed that this halfway point is a great point for a team swap. Jessica also said that she thinks there is a 99.99% chance for Team Big Brother and Team Ocean Rescue to swap partners with one another. Rob and Jessica are almost certain that the swap will be for an entire non-elimination leg, while Mike thinks it will be for a few tasks within a leg. Jessica thinks that we will first see the team swap non-elimination leg, then the second Double U-Turn of the season.

Mike did say that he enjoyed the return of the “This” or “That” blindfold Detour option. Rob’s main gripe is that he wishes the keg challenge was “That” so we could say that the teams would have to “tap that.” Rob also said that he enjoyed the lecture more, to wish Jessica says that is because Rob wishes we saw the “Pencils Down Guy” again. Jessica also questioned the decision of Team Indy Car to opt for public transportation instead of taking a cab. Rob loved that Daniel managed to think that one of the words in the Roadblock was “wife” instead of the correct word “life.” Mike mentioned that he does not think that Team Ocean Rescue is long for the Race.

Mike also mentioned that Trevor & Chris said that the people who fixed Evan’s tooth thought she was sex-trafficked from her bruises from the sailing challenge and all the men (from the camera crew and production) around her. Mike and Jessica pointed out how Team Well Strung’s main mistakes were from the last leg and were screwed by that. Mike also thinks that Team Well Strung could very well have won in an alternate universe. Jessica also enjoyed the fact that “Is the Earth round or flat?” was the last question on the oral exam. The obvious team swaps of Cody & Lucas and Brittany & Jessica would be enjoyable to all but Mike thinks Cody & Evan could be fun. Jessica pointed out how anyone with Jessica or Cody could make for a fun team. Mike was also surprised that we have not seen the Express Pass this season as well.

On a night where we saw the “surprise” engagement of Lucas & Brittany, we also saw the unsurprising end of Cedric & Shawn’s run on the Race. On a night of unsurprising things, Joey & Tim’s elimination could have been seen a mile away. Rob said that Eric & Daniel pushing their car in reverse reminded him of an episode of Mr. Bean. They laughed when Cody said he does not want to move to France because of their lack of a Constitution and a Bill of Rights after Jessica exclaimed how nice it was there. They also enjoyed Alex not reading his clue all the way and failing at the first Roadblock because of it. Rob also noted how the fight between Lucas & Brittany in the first leg was getting a little ugly at one point, while also noting the hilarity of Brittany getting hit by the automatic doors in the supermarket.

While Mike noted how Kristi & Jen haven’t had any major slip-ups in five legs, Jessica called them the team to beat thus far. Rob then called Evan’s cracked tooth the most exciting dental moment since JT’s cracked tooth on Survivor: Tocantins. They also note how Evan has recently either got/shown a new nose piercing. Mike called Cedric in the little boat The Amazing Race version of the fat guy in a little coat. Jessica also appreciated how balanced the detour options in the first leg, Bread & Tread, were. Rob did not like how similar the ball colors were in the Head-to-Head. Jessica noted how Joey & Tim had their best leg before their elimination leg. Mike noted how he loved how snarky Trevor & Chris are, while Rob pointed out how bad Trevor was at the Head-to-Head game. Jessica was surprised how Cedric & Shawn underestimated the skills they would need on the Race.

Rob compared the second Roadblock of the night to a Game of Thrones set and loved the use of the stockade, but not all the stock puns. Mike noted the unbalanced Detours this leg, and that Trevor & Chris and Henry & Evan even switched Detours to avoid the puzzle. In regards to the engagement, Rob said they lost him at the commercial break, where they lost Jessica when they showed Lucas’ pocket. Mike loved how Phil made Lucas & Brittany stay on the mat the whole time. Jessica was also disappointed that Phil did not have a good pun for Joey & Tim once they came in last. Mike then grossly overestimated that Joey Chestnut had 72,000 Twitter followers when the truthful number was 23,000. Now, we are five out of twelve legs done in this Race, almost at the halfway point.

While Jessica Liese would not stop to watch a feral cat, they were all amazed with how teams completely changed positions throughout this non-elimination leg. Rob noted how Team Slam Dunk went from first to last and Mike noted how Team Extreme went from third to last and back to the third to end the leg. Jessica said that after she wrote a note saying “Cedric is crushing this,” he ceased crushing it. The first “Why would you do that?” claim when wondering why Cedric wore his backpack for the roadblock. Mike exclaimed “WWYDT?” (Why would you do that?) again moments later after Team Slam Dunk, Team Firefighters, and Team Ocean Rescue chose the fruit carrying detour instead of the belly dancing detour. None of them particularly enjoyed the fish stacking task, as did nobody on the race except Jessica.

With a podcast featuring many laughs, Jessica laughed at how Team Slam Dunk missed the Travelocity gnome many times and at how the Travelocity Gnome had the adrenaline rush instead of the actual teams. Mike said he felt bad for Cedric when he was struggling climbing up the American Ninja Warrior-like warped wall. Additionally, after the teams heard the secret code on the phone, Rob was disappointed that the teams did not have to run a mile to find the person to tell the code to. Jessica also said she understood why Shawn was nervous to flag down Cedric after the Roadblock after the penalty they received in the first leg. Jessica also had made an addendum to her detour rules saying that, if you are on a season with a low budget, always pick the puzzle task, which is likely to be easier.

Jessica gave a hot-take tonight saying that the preview for #GnomeGate2018 was the second-most anti-climatic preview vs. actual reality show event ever, only behind the Survivor: Borneo preview, which referenced a castaway coming back, but only being Greg Buis being a member of the jury. Rob said it was classic Amazing Race to have Brittany have a major problem going into commercial to it immediately being solved right after commercial. Jessica noted how impressed she was with Team Yale’s redemption arc and was happy that they received an actual reward.

All three laughed at Phil’s enthusiasm that Team Yale’s vacation included an afternoon of mini-golf. Jessica joked that if The Amazing Race runs out of money, season 31 will be a race around a mini-golf course. To which Rob added that a sample detour will be, to knock the ball into the Eiffel Tower on hole 3 or get the ball around the Sphinx in under 5 strokes on hole 5. Jessica was impressed with the duds having off-the-chart nights, including Conor, Jen, Eric, Daniel, and Cedric (whose heart was off the KEG charts). All three laughed at Phil’s numerous puns in the preview.

Jessica (Liese) said that if she was with Cody, she’d try to do as many early roadblocks so Cody can do the later ones. Mike thinks that the next Head-to-Head will be similar to bocce ball and the Survivor marble challenge. Jessica added that she thinks it will take place after Team Slam Dunk’s speed bump. The #Bloom5 was created when he said he thinks the top 5 from this leg will be the final 5, but Jessica substituted Team Chomp for Team Big Brother, while Rob is skeptical about Team Indy Car’s chances.
