We live in interesting times – History in the making?
People say some politicians can’t control themselves. Will tempers fray? Is the world changing while we stand by & watch Korea’s Beloved Leader, POTUS and our own Malcolm. The history of our world will make interesting reading in a generation’s time, especially our current drive for Marriage Equality and the seemingly reluctance of our politicians to recognise and act on the reality of public opinion.
We discuss two chroniclers of gay history from the 1970s – the AIDS Era; the politics and the reality.
Randy Shilts (photo) of the San Francisco Chronicle documented the stories of the time and created a public awareness that even the US President Ronald Reagan eventually could not deny.
Locally, we have our own internationally renowned recorder of the story – Professor Dennis Altman. His first book in 1971 was ‘Homosexual: Oppression and Liberation’.
At this time, we refer to the lives of Renee Richards – ophthalmologist and tennis player – and Chelsea Manning – US soldier, prisoner and Wiki-Leaker; both of whom courageously transitioned to the gender of their choice.
